TL;DR: The results showed a reduction of the SnCl(2) effect on the survival of the cultures in presence of the crude extracts, and the extract of M. ilicifolia showed the highest level of protection action against the Sn claret effect in comparison with the other extracts.
Abstract: Stannous ion has been used in different sectors of human interest, such as in food industry and in health sciences. Much is known about stannous chloride (SnCl(2)) toxicity, although, there is no general agreement regarding its genotoxicity. Cymbopogon citratus, Maytenus ilicifolia and Baccharis genistelloides extracts have been used in popular medicine. We evaluated the influence of these crude extracts on the survival of the Escherichia coli wild type (AB 1157) strain submitted to SnCl(2) treatment. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can be generated by a Fenton like reaction induced by SnCl(2). E. coli culture was treated simultaneously with SnCl(2) and a specific extract. Our results showed a reduction of the SnCl(2) effect on the survival of the cultures in presence of the crude extracts. The extract of M. ilicifolia showed the highest level of protection action against the SnCl(2) effect in comparison with the other extracts. This protector effect could due to the redox properties of these crude extracts. The compounds in the crude extracts could (i) chelate stannous ions, protecting them against the oxidation and avoiding the generation of ROS, (ii) be a scavenger of the ROS generated by the SnCl(2) oxidation and/or (iii) have oxidant compounds that could oxidise the stannous ions, abolishing or reducing the SnCl(2) effect.

Abstract: The inclusive jet cross section for proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was measured by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns. The measurement covers a phase space up to 2 TeV in jet transverse momentum and 2.5 in absolute jet rapidity. The statistical precision of these data leads to stringent constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton. The data provide important input for the gluon density at high fractions of the proton momentum and for the strong coupling constant at large energy scales. Using predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, complemented with electroweak corrections, the constraining power of these data is investigated and the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass M[Z] is determined to be alpha[S(M[Z])} = 0.1185 +/- 0.0019 (exp) +0.0060 -0.0037 (theo), which is in agreement with the world average.

TL;DR: This article reviews the literature on steady-state and dynamic Monte Carlo methods in polymer reaction engineering and hopes to convince the readers that playing dice regularly can be a great asset to polymer reactors engineers.
Abstract: Monte Carlo methods are heuristic algorithms that use probabilities to select an outcome among several possible events in a given process. Monte Carlo methods are useful in polymer reaction engineering because they can predict the molecular architecture of polymers with details that cannot be easily captured by any other modeling technique. One of the advantages of Monte Carlo simulation is that one does not need to solve differential or algebraic equations to predict the microstructures of polymers. This article reviews the literature on steady-state and dynamic Monte Carlo methods in polymer reaction engineering. We hope to convince the readers that playing dice regularly can be a great asset to polymer reactors engineers.
