Abstract: Seasonal reproduction of small mammals in the tropics usually is related to annual cycles of rainfall. We examined effects of weather and food availability on reproduction and population ecology of Nectomys squamipes, Oryzomys intermedius, Akodon cursor and Trinomys iheringi . Each species was studied monthly from February 1993 to January 1995 using mark-recapture methods at Ilha do Cardoso, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Average capture rate for each month was used as an index of population size, and survival rate was estimated by the Jolly-Seber method. Direct effects of food availability and rainfall were related to female reproductive activity and survival rate. Path analyses were used to describe quantitatively the hypothesized causal relations among the variables. N. squamipes reproduced seasonally, and O. intermedius, T. iheringi , and A. cursor reproduced all year with peaks during the rainy season. Species responded differently to the environmental factors; however, food availability seems to be the main factor determining reproduction. Abundance of rains appears to diminish survival rate of O. intermedius . Survival rate of N. squamipes increases with increases in fruit availability.

Abstract: This article concerns the evaluation of cross-cultural equivalence between the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) originally developed in English and used to identify violence in couples and a Portuguese-language version for use in Brazil. Besides a broad literature review, evaluation of conceptual and item equivalences involved expert discussion groups focusing on the existence and pertinence of the underlying theoretical concepts and corresponding component items in the Brazilian context. Semantic equivalence involved the following steps: two translations and respective back-translations; an evaluation regarding referential and general (connotative) equivalence between the original instrument and each version; further discussions with experts in order to define the final version; and pre-testing the latter on 774 women. It was possible to establish high-quality conceptual, item, and semantic equivalence between the Portuguese-language version and the original CTS2. Acceptability of the version was excellent. Although the results were encouraging, they should be reevaluated in the light of forthcoming psychometric analysis (measurement equivalence).

Abstract: Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented. The data were taken with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 270 nb^(−1). The correlations are studied over a broad range of pseudorapidity (|η| 2.0), near-side (Δϕ≈0) structure emerges in the two-particle Δη–Δϕ correlation functions. The magnitude of the correlation exhibits a pronounced maximum in the range 1.0

Abstract: A measurement is presented of the charged hadron multiplicity in hadronic PbPb collisions, as a function of pseudorapidity and centrality, at a collision energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair. The data sample is collected using the CMS detector and a minimum-bias trigger, with the CMS solenoid off. The number of charged hadrons is measured both by counting the number of reconstructed particle hits and by forming hit doublets of pairs of layers in the pixel detector. The two methods give consistent results. The charged hadron multiplicity density dN(ch)/d eta, evaluated at eta=0 for head-on collisions, is found to be 1612 +/- 55, where the uncertainty is dominated by systematic effects. Comparisons of these results to previous measurements and to various models are also presented.
