Abstract: The results of searches for supersymmetry by the CMS experiment are interpreted in the framework of simplified models. The results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.73 to 4.98 inverse femtobarns. The data were collected at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. This paper describes the method of interpretation and provides upper limits on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction as a function of new particle masses for a number of simplified models. These limits and the corresponding experimental acceptance calculations can be used to constrain other theoretical models and to compare different supersymmetry-inspired analyses.

Abstract: Cumulative evidence suggests that moderate wine consumption exerts a cardioprotective effect. We investigated the occurrence of an antihypertensive effect of an alcohol-free hydroalcoholic grape skin extract (GSE) obtained from skins of a vinifera grape (Vitis labrusca) in experimental rodent hypertension models. The vasodilator effect of GSE (polyphenols concentration 55.5 mg g(-1)) was also assessed in the isolated mesenteric vascular bed of Wistar rats and the antioxidant effect was studied on lipid peroxidation of hepatic microsomes. Oral administration of GSE significantly reduced systolic, mean and diastolic arterial pressure in Wistar rats with desoxycorticosterone acetate-salt and N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) induced experimental hypertension. In the rat isolated mesenteric vascular bed pre-contracted with norepinephrine, bolus injections of GSE induced endothelium-dependent vasodilatation that was substantially inhibited by L-NAME, but not by indometacin, tetraethylammonium or glibenclamide. Lipid peroxidation of hepatic microsomes estimated as malondialdehyde production was concentration-dependently inhibited by GSE. In conclusion, the antihypertensive effect of GSE might be owing to a combination of vasodilator and antioxidant actions of GSE. These findings also suggest that the beneficial effect of moderate red wine consumption could be owing to an antihypertensive action induced by compounds occurring in the skin of vinifera grapes.

Abstract: There are many different studies that contribute to the global picture of the ethnic heterogeneity in Brazilian populations. These studies use different types of genetic markers and are focused on the comparison of populations at different levels. In some of them, each geographical region is treated as a single homogeneous population, whereas other studies create different subdivisions: political (e.g., pooling populations by State), demographic (e.g., urban and rural), or ethnic (e.g., culture, self-declaration, or skin colour). In this study, we performed an enhanced reassessment of the genetic ancestry of ~ 1,300 Brazilians characterised for 46 autosomal Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs). In addition, 798 individuals from twelve Brazilian populations representing the five geographical macro-regions of Brazil were newly genotyped, including a Native American community and a rural Amazonian community. Following an increasing North to South gradient, European ancestry was the most prevalent in all urban populations (with values up to 74%). The populations in the North consisted of a significant proportion of Native American ancestry that was about two times higher than the African contribution. Conversely, in the Northeast, Center-West and Southeast, African ancestry was the second most prevalent. At an intrapopulation level, all urban populations were highly admixed, and most of the variation in ancestry proportions was observed between individuals within each population rather than among population. Nevertheless, individuals with a high proportion of Native American ancestry are only found in the samples from Terena and Santa Isabel. Our results allowed us to further refine the genetic landscape of Brazilians while establishing the basis for the effective application of an autosomal AIM panel in forensic casework and clinical association studies within the highly admixed Brazilian populations.

Abstract: The first observation of the associated production of a single top quark and a W boson is presented. The analysis is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.2 fb^(−1) of proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Events with two leptons and a jet originating from a b quark are selected. A multivariate analysis based on kinematic and topological properties is used to separate the signal from the dominant tt background. An excess consistent with the signal hypothesis is observed, with a significance which corresponds to 6.1 standard deviations above a background-only hypothesis. The measured production cross section is 23.4±5.4 pb , in agreement with the standard model prediction.
