Abstract: The inclusive jet cross section is measured in pp collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC using the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 inverse picobarns. The measurement is made for jet transverse momenta in the range 18-1100 GeV and for absolute values of rapidity less than 3. The measured cross section extends to the highest values of jet pT ever observed and, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties, is generally in agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions.

Abstract: Single-nucleotide polymorphismswithin thegenescodingfortumornecrosisfactor(TNF)‐a and interleukin (IL)‐10 have been associated with several infectious diseases. To determine whether such polymorphisms are associated with leprosy, genotyping was performed at the 308 and 238 positions of the promoter of the TNF-a gene in 210 and 191 patients with multibacillary (MB) leprosy, respectively; 90 and 79 patients with paucibacillary (PB) leprosy; and 92 control subjects. For the 592 and 819 positions within the promoter of the IL-10 gene, 143 patients with MB leprosy, 79 patients with PB leprosy, and 62 control subjects were included in the analysis. TNF2 allele frequency was significantly higheramong controlsubjects than among all patients with leprosy or in the MB group ( and ). For the ILP ! .05 P ! .01 10 gene, the frequency of the homozygous 819TT genotype was significantly higher among patients than among control subjects. These data indicate that a relationship exists between TNF-a and IL-10 promoter polymorphisms and the development of PB leprosy. The more benign paucibacillary (PB) forms of leprosy— borderline tuberculoid (BT) and tuberculoid tuberculoid (TT) leprosy—are characterized by the predominance of a Th1-type immune response, the presence of well-formed granulomas at the site of the lesion, and control of mycobacterial replication. In contrast, in the multibacillary (MB) forms—borderline borderline (BB) and borderline lepromatous (BL) leprosy and lepromatous leprosy (LL)—no granuloma is seen, and high bacterial load and antibody levels are detected. Abstract: Summary Background Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a defect of enamel. The lower strength of the enamel can lead to fractures that predispose for plaque accumulation and caries. Aim This systematic review aimed to assess the association between MIH and caries. Design Studies involving children of all ages, which reported results on MIH and caries in the permanent dentition, were considered eligible. A search was performed in PubMed and was limited to the period from January 2003 to November 2015, and to studies written in English. Reviews, meta-analyses, and case reports were excluded. The studies were evaluated by use of the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS). Results Seventeen publications were compiled in the review. Most publications reported that children with MIH have higher caries experience. One study did not observe a difference in DMF values among children affected or not by MIH. Three studies reported that children with MIH were 2.1 to 4.6 times more likely to have caries in the permanent dentition than children without MIH. Conclusions A significant association between MIH and caries was found. The results should, however, be interpreted cautiously due to the lack of high-quality studies. The present systematic review confirms the need for further well-designed studies.

Abstract: Highly efficient production of a Thermomyces lanuginosus IOC-4145 β-1,4-xylanase was achieved in Pichia pastoris under the control of the AOX1 promoter. P. pastoris colonies expressing recombinant xylanase were selected by enzymatic activity plate assay, and their ability to secrete high levels of the enzyme was evaluated in small-scale cultures. Furthermore, an optimization of enzyme production was carried out with a 23 factorial design. The influence of initial cell density, methanol, and yeast nitrogen base concentration was evaluated, and initial cell density was found to be the most important parameter. A time course profile of recombinant xylanase production in 1-liter flasks with the optimized conditions was performed and 148 mg of xylanase per liter was achieved. Native and recombinant xylanases were purified by gel filtration and characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, circular dichroism spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry and physicochemical behavior. Three recombinant protein species of 21.9, 22.1, and 22.3 kDa were detected in the mass spectrum due to variability in the amino terminus. The optimum temperature, thermostability, and circular dichroic spectra of the recombinant and native xylanases were identical. For both enzymes, the optimum temperature was 75°C, and they retained 60% of their original activity after 80 min at 70°C or 40 min at 80°C. The high level of fully active recombinant xylanase obtained in P. pastoris makes this expression system attractive for fermentor growth and industrial applications.
