Abstract: Wound healing is a complex process that does not always occur harmoniously and may lead to pathological scar development, such as hypertrophic scars and keloids. Considering that vascularization can play a role in the development of these scars, and that the literature is controversial, we performed a stereological analysis of dermal for vessels of normal skin, normal scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids. The parameters studied concerned vessels: surface density, length density; for vessels and myofibroblasts: volume density, in papillary and reticular dermis. The pattern of dermal vascularization in normal skin and normal scar showed no differences. In papillary demis, the number of vessels was higher in hypertrophic scars and keloids than in normal skin (p < 0.05). Vessels of hypertrophic scars were more dilated than those of normal skin (p < 0.01). In reticular dermis, vessels were present in higher amount in hypertrophic scars and keloids than in normal skin (p < 0.025; p < 0.001, respectively). The pattern of vascularization did not show any differences between hypertrophic scars and keloids. Our results show that hypertrophic scars and keloids have a distinct pattern of vascularization compared to normal skin and normal scars. This indicates that abnormal vascularization can be involved in the development of hypertrophic scars and keloids.

Abstract: The South Atlantic Meso-Cenozoic continental margins are located in regions characterized by a long-lived history of Proterozoic extension, structural inversion and compressional remobilization of basement and supracrustal rocks. The roots of the present-day southeastern Brazilian continental margin (e.g. Santos and Campos basins) are associated with terranes directly affected by the Brasiliano orogenic collage. This event was responsible for the Ribeira fold belt, which is characterized by compressional, metamorphic and magmatic episodes from Late Precambrian to the earliest Paleozoic. The initial phases of subsidence of the intracratonic Parana basin, located west of the Ribeira fold belt, correspond to early Paleozoic siliciclastic rocks deposited in depocenters that were probably controlled by Brasiliano fabrics. The basin-forming stress fields may be related to the lithospheric convergence between Panthalassa oceanic crust and cratonic blocks of western Gondwana. The last phase of subsidence in the Parana basin is marked by Late Jurassic / Early Cretaceous tholeiitic continental flood basalts. These basalts heralded the breakup of Gondwana. They were also deposited on the Precambrian basement offshore, and are believed to be part of the rift succession. The breakup of western Gondwana and the onset of a new phase of plate divergence in the South Atlantic were marked by thick wedges of seaward-dipping reflectors near the incipient oceanic-ridge spreading center. Subsequently, a few episodes of intraplate tectonic and magmatic activity are also possibly related to compressional stresses resulting from subduction in the Andean margin and ridge push in the mid-Atlantic spreading ridge.

Abstract: The objective of this survey was to assess the relationships between intestinal parasitism, nutritional status and hemoglobin level in children with Indian ascendancy living in an urban area in Brazilian Amazon. We carried out a cross-sectional survey obtaining anthropometric, parasitological and socioeconomic data, and hemoglobin measurements of children aged six to 84 months. Anthropometric data were expressed as z-scores for weight for age (WAZ), height for age (HAZ), weight for height (WHZ) and mid upper circumference for age (MUACZ) parameters. Parasitological examinations were performed through Ritchie (n = 307), Kato-Katz (n = 278), Baermann-Moraes (n = 238) and Safranin-methylene blue methods (n = 307). Hemoglobin measurements were obtained with a Hemocue photometer (n = 282). Socioeconomic data were used in order to classify children in three family income strata (n = 242). Multiple linear regression analysis showed independent interactions between Giardia lamblia and WAZ (beta = -0.195, SE = 0.138, p = 0.003), WHZ (beta = -0.161, SE = 0.133, p = 0.018) and MUACZ (beta = -0.197, SE = 0.143, p = 0.011), controlling for age, sex, family income, Ascaris lumbricoides, and hookworm infection. Also, the multivariate model showed that the only variable associated with hemoglobin levels was age. Intestinal parasitism control should increase children's possibilities of full development in the studied area.

Abstract: A search for fermionic top quark partners T of charge 2/3 is presented. The search is carried out in proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns collected at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The T quarks are assumed to be produced strongly in pairs and can decay into tH, tZ, and bW. The search is performed in five exclusive channels: a single-lepton channel, a multilepton channel, two all-hadronic channels optimized either for the bW or the tH decay, and one channel in which the Higgs boson decays into two photons. The results are found to be compatible with the standard model expectations in all the investigated final states. A statistical combination of these results is performed and lower limits on the T quark mass are set. Depending on the branching fractions, lower mass limits between 720 and 920 GeV at 95% confidence level are found. These are among the strongest limits on vector-like T quarks obtained to date.

Abstract: Background: The levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) have been reported to be higher in sites with periodontitis than in healthy controls. This may be the result of a more severe inflammation and/or constitutional differences in IL-1β production. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that the level of IL-1β in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is a characteristic trait of periodontitis, regardless of the degree of tissue destruction. As a secondary aim, we investigated the correlation between IL-1β and neutrophil elastase. An untreated population was used. Methods: GCF samples from inflamed sites in 13 patients with gingivitis (GG), and from inflamed sites with shallow (GP) and deep (PP) pockets in 18 patients with periodontitis were collected. Interleukin-1β, elastase-α-1-antitrypsin complex (E-A1AT), α-1- antitrypsin (A1AT), and α-2-macroglobulin (A2MG) were measured with ELISA. Elastase activity was measured with a specific substrate.
