Abstract: We report the discovery of a transient equivalent hydrogen column density with an absorption edge at ∼3.8 kiloelectron volts in the spectrum of the prompt x-ray emission of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990705. This feature can be satisfactorily modeled with a photoelectric absorption by a medium located at a redshift of ∼0.86 and with an iron abundance of ∼75 times the solar one. The transient behavior is attributed to the strong ionization produced in the circumburst medium by the GRB photons. The high iron abundance points to the existence of a burst environment enriched by a supernova along the line of sight. The supernova explosion is estimated to have occurred about 10 years before the burst. Our results agree with models in which GRBs originate from the collapse of very massive stars and are preceded by a supernova event.

Abstract: We report an experimental realization of Maxwell's demon in a photonic setup. We show that a measurement at the few-photons level followed by a feed-forward operation allows the extraction of work from intense thermal light into an electric circuit. The interpretation of the experiment stimulates the derivation of an equality relating work extraction to information acquired by measurement. We derive a bound using this relation and show that it is in agreement with the experimental results. Our work puts forward photonic systems as a platform for experiments related to information in thermodynamics.

Abstract: The gravity model is a workhorse tool applicable in a wide range of empirical fields. It is regularly used to estimate the impact of reciprocal trade agreements (RTAs) on trade flows between partners. The studies report very different estimates since there is a significant difference in datasets, sample sizes, and independent variables. This paper combines, explains, and summarizes a large number of results using a meta-analysis approach. We provide pooled estimates, obtained from fixed and random effects models of the RTAs’ effect size on bilateral trade: the hypothesis that there is no effect of RTAs on trade is robustly rejected at standard significance levels. The information collected on each estimate allows us to test the sensitivity of the results to alternative specifications and differences in the control variables considered, as well as the impact of the publication selection process.

Abstract: Railway conflict detection and resolution is the daily task faced by dispatchers and consists of adjusting train schedules whenever disturbances make the timetable infeasible. The main objective pursued by dispatchers in this task is the minimization of train delays, while train operating companies are also interested in other indicators of passenger dissatisfaction. The two objectives are conflicting whenever train delay reduction requires cancellation of some connected services, causing extra waiting times to transferring passengers. In fact, the infrastructure company and the train operating companies discuss on which connection to keep or drop in order to reach a compromise solution. This paper considers the bi-objective problem of minimizing train delays and missed connections in order to provide a set of feasible non-dominated schedules to support this decisional process. We use a detailed alternative graph model to ensure schedule feasibility and develop two heuristic algorithms to compute the Pareto front of non-dominated schedules. Our computational study, based on a complex and densely occupied Dutch railway network, shows that good coordination of connected train services is important to achieve real-time efficiency of railway services since the management of connections may heavily affect train punctuality. The two algorithms approximate accurately the Pareto front in a limited computation time.

Abstract: The purpose of the research is to describe the swelling-induced large deformations in polymer gels: a theoretical model is developed, and then implemented and solved using the finite element method. The model is firstly assessed with two well-known benchmark problems; moreover, the proposed approach is benchmarked against a recent experiment involving localized exposure of the gel boundary to a solvent, where large bending deformations appear during solvent absorption. In both cases, our results are quite satisfying.
