Abstract: This paper presents a search for direct electroweak gaugino or gluino pair production with a chargino nearly mass-degenerate with a stable neutralino. It is based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb$^{−1}$ of pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state of interest is a disappearing track accompanied by at least one jet with high transverse momentum from initial-state radiation or by four jets from the gluino decay chain. The use of short track segments reconstructed from the innermost tracking layers significantly improves the sensitivity to short chargino lifetimes. The results are found to be consistent with Standard Model predictions. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the mass of charginos and gluinos for different chargino lifetimes. For a pure wino with a lifetime of about 0.2 ns, chargino masses up to 460 GeV are excluded. For the strong production channel, gluino masses up to 1.65 TeV are excluded assuming a chargino mass of 460 GeV and lifetime of 0.2 ns.

Abstract: A smart city application has been realized and tested. It is a fully remote controlled isle of lamp posts based on new technologies. It has been designed and organized in different hierarchical layers, which perform local activities to physically control the lamp posts and transmit information with another for remote control. Locally, each lamp post uses an electronic card for management and a ZigBee tlc network transmits data to a central control unit, which manages the whole isle. The central unit is realized with a Raspberry-Pi control card due to its good computing performance at very low price. Finally, a WiMAX connection was tested and used to remotely control the smart grid, thus overcoming the distance limitations of commercial Wi-Fi networks. The isle has been realized and tested for some months in the field.

Abstract: In this Letter, we present evidence suggesting that the absence or presence of hidden broad-line regions (HBLRs) in Seyfert 2 galaxies is regulated by the rate at which matter accretes onto a central supermassive black hole, in units of the Eddington rate. Evidence is based on data from a subsample of type 2 active galactic nuclei extracted from the Tran spectropolarimetric sample and made up of all those sources that also have good-quality X-ray spectra available and for which a bulge luminosity can be estimated. We use the intrinsic (i.e., unabsorbed) X-ray luminosities of these sources and their black hole masses (estimated by using the well-known relationship between nuclear mass and bulge luminosity in galaxies) to derive the nuclear accretion rate in Eddington units. We find that virtually all HBLR sources have accretion rates larger than a threshold value of thres 10-3 (in Eddington units), while non-HBLR sources lie at thres. These data nicely fit predictions from a model proposed by Nicastro in which the broad-line regions (BLRs) are formed by accretion disk instabilities occurring in proximity of the critical radius at which the disk changes from gas pressure dominated to radiation pressure dominated. This radius diminishes with decreasing ; for low enough accretion rates (and therefore luminosities), the critical radius becomes smaller than the innermost stable orbit and BLRs cannot form.

We also search for a GWB arising from scalar and vector modes, which are predicted by alternative theories of gravity; we do not find evidence of these, and place upper limits on the strength of GWBs with these polarizations. We demonstrate that there is no evidence of correlated noise of magnetic origin by performing a Bayesian analysis that allows for the presence of both a GWB and an effective magnetic background arising from geophysical Schumann resonances. We compare our upper limits to a fiducial model for the GWB from the merger of compact binaries, updating the model to use the most recent data-driven population inference from the systems detected during O3a. Finally, we combine our results with observations of individual mergers and show that, at design sensitivity, this joint approach may yield stronger constraints on the merger rate of binary black holes at
z

than can be achieved with individually resolved mergers alone.
