Abstract: Optical methods are becoming commonplace in investiga- tions of the physical and mechanical behavior of biological tissues. Digital image correlation (DIC) is a versatile optical method that shows tremendous promise for applications involving biological tis- sues and biomaterials. We present the fundamentals of DIC with an emphasis on the application to biological materials. An approach for surface preparation is described that facilitates its application to hy- drated substrates. Three examples are presented that highlight the use of DIC for biomedical research. The first example describes the use of DIC to study the mechanical behavior of arterial tissues up to 40% elongation. The second example describes an evaluation of the me- chanical properties of bovine hoof horn in the dehydrated and fully hydrated states. Uniaxial tension experiments are performed to deter- mine the elastic modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio (n) of both the arterial and dermal tissues. Spatial variations in the mechanical properties are evident from the full-field characterization of both tissues. Finally, an application of DIC to study the evolution of loosening in cemented total hip replacements is described. The noncontact analysis enables measurement of the relative displacement between the bone/bone ce- ment and bone cement/prosthesis interfaces. Based on the elementary optical arrangement, the simple surface preparation, and the ability to acquire displacement/strain measurements over a large range of de- formation, DIC should serve as a valuable tool for biomedical re- search. Abstract: In this study, a facile one-pot process for the synthesis of hierarchical VS2/graphene nanosheets (VS2/GNS) composites based on the coincident interaction of VS2 and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide is developed for the first time. The nanocomposites possess a hierarchical structure of 50 nm VS2 sheets in thickness homogeneously anchored on graphene. The VS2/GNS nanocomposites exhibit an impressive high-rate capability and good cyclic stability as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries, which retain 89.3% of the initial capacity 180.1 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. Even at 20 C, the composites still deliver a high capacity of 114.2 mAh g–1 corresponding to 62% of the low-rate capacity. Expanded studies show that VS2/GNS, as an anode material, also has a good reversible performance with 528 mAh g–1 capacity after 100 cycles at 200 mA g–1. Abstract: Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor has been considered as a reliable sensor for health monitoring of structural and geotechnical projects. Various types of FBG based sensors have been proposed in past few decades and employed for health monitoring of many geotechnical structures. This paper presents an overview of the recent development and application of FBG based sensors for health monitoring of several key geotechnical structures, including soil nail systems, slopes, and piles. Different sensor design, implementation and packaging methods, advantages and limitations of using FBG based sensors in different projects are reviewed. Comparative analysis of using two mathematical methods for the prediction of ground movement using FBG sensor data are also carried out. The two typical mathematical methods include Finite Difference Method (FDM) and Numerical Integration method (NIM). Possible technical challenges of applying FBG sensors for geotechnical monitoring are discussed.
