Abstract: Suppose E is an arbitrary real Banach space and K is a nonempty closed convex and bounded subset of E. Suppose T : K —>• K is a uniformly continuous strong pseudocontraction. It is proved that the Mann and the Ishikawa iteration methods converge strongly to the unique fixed point of T. Furthermore, our results also hold for the slightly more general class of strictly hemicontractive maps. Related results deal with the iterative approximation of solutions of accretive operator equations in arbitrary real Banach spaces. Abstract: The protein, trypsin inhibitor (TI), tannin, phytate, phytic acid phosphorus and in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD) of cultivars of the African yambean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) — AYB, pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) — PP and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) — CP were determined. The protein content of CP (24–28.0%) was higher than those of PP (21–22.5%) and AYB (21–22.5%). The cream and speckled AYB contained more TI (30.9 and 25.3 mg/g) than PP (7.5–14.1 mg/g) and CP (9.8–20.5 mg/g). Apart from the white CP cultivar, they contained more tannin (1.24–1.42 mg/g) than PP (0.14–0.97 mg/g) and AYB (0.71–1.17 mg/g). Phytate was lowest in the AYB (6.30–7.49 mg/g) than PP (8.31–11.31 mg/g) and CP (8.40–9.92 mg/g). Phytic acid contributed 67–74% of the phosphorous in the AYB, 66–75% in PP and 54–59% in CP. The IVPD of the AYB (73.3±0.7%) was significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of PP (76.34±0.2%) and CP (77.8±0.4%). There was a significant negative correlation between TI and IVPD (r=−0.63,p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between IVPD and phytate and tannin contents. There was a positive correlation between protein content and IVPD (r=0.69**) for the legumes under study. These legumes may pose no serious problems to populations consuming them especially when heat treatment is applied before consumption.

Abstract: Background: Estimation of fetal weight is important for antenatal and intrapartum management of pregnant women. Sonographic methods are not readily accessible in under-resourced settings, it is therefore necessary to study the accuracy of a clinical method of estimating fetal weight where this limitation (unavailability of ultrasound) exists. Objective: To compare the accuracy of clinical and ultrasound methods of fetal weight estimation at term. Materials and Methods: Clinical and ultrasound fetal weights were estimated on 200 consecutive term pregnancies (37 completed weeks of gestation - 41 weeks and 6 days) at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria from 1 st April to 30 th November 2012. Accuracy was determined using percentage error, absolute percentage error, and proportion of estimates within 10% of actual birth weight. Results: Actual birth weight had strong positive correlation with both clinical and ultrasound estimated fetal weights (r = 0.71, P Conclusion: The ultrasound method is generally a better predictor of the actual birth weight than the clinical method, and thus should be used in estimating the actual birth weight when accessible.

Abstract: The effluent from the waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Campus, is used for irrigation by poor rural farmers. There has been fear that the poorly maintained WSPs and the reuse practices are contributing to environmental degradation and health hazards. In this study the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of the WSPs and reuse were evaluated based on data collected from questionnaires and the literature. The engineering and agricultural properties of soil in the irrigated and nonirrigated areas were compared. Comparison of the health status of the farmers and nonfarmers, of consumers of crops irrigated with wastewater and nonconsumers was performed using Student's t test and the z-score test. The occurrences of diarrhea, typhoid fever, and malaria among the various groups were used as indices. Analyses show that the health status of the farmers and consumers is poorer than those of nonfarmers and nonconsumers at the 5% level of significance. Vegetable cultivation using WSP effluent is a means of sustenance to the farmers and provides an affordable means of satisfying their nutritional deficiencies. However, the poorly maintained WSPs create odor and mosquito nuisances, trap and destroy livestock, and flood nearby compounds with waste debris. At both 1% and 5% levels of significance, communities around the ponds (<300 m) suffer malaria more frequently than those who live far away (?300 m). Cost–benefit analysis argues in favor of improvement of WSP management and irrigation reuse of wastewater. Dredging of the ponds, training workers and farmers, and adopting appropriate maintenance and monitoring strategies will greatly enhance the socioeconomic status of the urban poor farmers.
