TL;DR: In this paper, a composite anode of Cu/Si/Ge nanowire arrays was developed, where each Nanowire consists of a core of Cu segments and a Si/Ge bilayer shell.
Abstract: Advanced composite electrodes containing multiple active components are often used in lithium-ion batteries for practical applications The performance of such heterogeneous composite electrodes can in principle be enhanced by tailoring the concurrent reaction dynamics in multiple active components for promoting their collective beneficial effects However, the potential of this design principle has remained uncharted to date Here we develop a composite anode of Cu/Si/Ge nanowire arrays, where each nanowire consists of a core of Cu segments and a Si/Ge bilayer shell This unique electrode architecture exhibited a markedly improved electrochemical performance over the reference Cu/Si systems, demonstrating a stable capacity retention (81% after 3000 cycles at 2C) and doubled specific capacity at a rate of 16C (1C = 2 A g−1) By using in situ transmission electron microscopy and electrochemical testing, we unravel a novel reaction mechanism of dynamic co-lithiation/co-delithiation in the active Si and Ge bilayer, which is shown to effectively alleviate the electrochemically induced mechanical degradation and thus greatly enhance the long-cycle stability of the electrode Our findings offer insights into a rational design of high-performance lithium-ion batteries via exploiting the concurrent reaction dynamics in the multiple active components of composite electrodes

TL;DR: In this article, a bifunctional imidazolium functionalized zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF), (I−)Meim-UiO-66 (2), was successfully prepared from the iminazole-containing Zr-MoF Im UiO+66 (1) by a post-synthetic modification (PSM) method.
Abstract: A bifunctional imidazolium functionalized zirconium metal–organic framework (Zr-MOF), (I−)Meim-UiO-66 (2), was successfully prepared from the imidazole-containing Zr-MOF Im-UiO-66 (1) by a post-synthetic modification (PSM) method. It was found that the crystal size and pore features of the imidazole-containing 1 could be tuned at the nanoscale. The bifunctional MOF 2, containing Bronsted acid sites and iodide ions, was shown to be an efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) with epoxides, without the use of any co-catalyst, at ambient pressure. The solvent-free synthesis of the cyclic carbonate from CO2 and an epoxide was monitored by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and an acid/base synergistic catalysis mechanism was proposed. We hope that our strategy provides an effective approach for the introduction of functional N-heterocyclic groups into MOFs for potential applications.

TL;DR: A novel three-dimensional hotspot matrix that can hold hotspots between every two adjacent particles in 3D space is demonstrated, simply achieved by evaporating a droplet of citrate-Ag sols on a fluorosilylated silicon wafer.
Abstract: The “fixed” or “flexible” design of plasmonic hotspots is a frontier area of research in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Most reported SERS hotspots have been shown to exist in zero-dimensional point-like, one-dimensional linear, or two-dimensional planar geometries. Here, we demonstrate a novel three-dimensional (3D) hotspot matrix that can hold hotspots between every two adjacent particles in 3D space, simply achieved by evaporating a droplet of citrate-Ag sols on a fluorosilylated silicon wafer. In situ synchrotron-radiation small-angle X-ray scattering (SR-SAXS), combined with dark-field microscopy and in situ micro-UV, was employed to explore the evolution of the 3D geometry and plasmonic properties of Ag nanoparticles in a single droplet. In such a droplet, there is a distinct 3D geometry with minimal polydispersity of particle size and maximal uniformity of interparticle distance, significantly different from the dry state. According to theoretical simulations, the liquid adh...

TL;DR: It is shown that two-dimensional carbon yolk-shell nanosheets are promising sulfur host materials, enabling stable battery cells with high energy density, providing a promising direction for high-energy-density lithium–sulfur batteries.
Abstract: How to exert the energy density advantage is a key link in the development of lithium–sulfur batteries. Therefore, the performance degradation of high-sulfur-loading cathodes becomes an urgent problem to be solved at present. In addition, the volumetric capacities of high-sulfur-loading cathodes are still at a low level compared with their areal capacities. Aiming at these issues, two-dimensional carbon yolk-shell nanosheet is developed herein to construct a novel self-supporting sulfur cathode. The cathode with high-sulfur loading of 5 mg cm−2 and sulfur content of 73 wt% not only delivers an excellent rate performance and cycling stability, but also provides a favorable balance between the areal (5.7 mAh cm–2) and volumetric (1330 mAh cm–3) capacities. Remarkably, an areal capacity of 11.4 mAh cm–2 can be further achieved by increasing the sulfur loading from 5 to 10 mg cm–2. This work provides a promising direction for high-energy-density lithium–sulfur batteries. One of the challenges facing lithium-sulfur batteries is to develop cathodes with high mass and high volume loading. Here the authors show that two-dimensional carbon yolk-shell nanosheets are promising sulfur host materials, enabling stable battery cells with high energy density.
