In this paper, the galaxy size-mass distribution over the redshift range 0 3 × 10{sup 9} M {sub ☉}, and steep, R{sub eff}∝M{sub ∗}{sup 0.75}, for early-type galaxies with stellar mass > 2 × 10,sup 10} M{sub ǫ, and the intrinsic scattermore is ≲0.2 dex for all galaxy types and redshifts.Abstract:
Spectroscopic+photometric redshifts, stellar mass estimates, and rest-frame colors from the 3D-HST survey are combined with structural parameter measurements from CANDELS imaging to determine the galaxy size-mass distribution over the redshift range 0 3 × 10{sup 9} M {sub ☉}, and steep, R{sub eff}∝M{sub ∗}{sup 0.75}, for early-type galaxies with stellar mass >2 × 10{sup 10} M {sub ☉}. The intrinsic scattermore » is ≲0.2 dex for all galaxy types and redshifts. For late-type galaxies, the logarithmic size distribution is not symmetric but is skewed toward small sizes: at all redshifts and masses, a tail of small late-type galaxies exists that overlaps in size with the early-type galaxy population. The number density of massive (∼10{sup 11} M {sub ☉}), compact (R {sub eff} < 2 kpc) early-type galaxies increases from z = 3 to z = 1.5-2 and then strongly decreases at later cosmic times.« lessread more

The Morphological Evolution, AGN Fractions, Dust Content, Environments, and Downsizing of Massive Green Valley Galaxies at 0.5 < z < 2.5 in 3D-HST/CANDELS
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the evolutionary connection among red, green, and blue galaxy populations, based on a sample of massive galaxies at 0.5 2 and find that the bulk of star formation in more massive galaxies is completed earlier than that of lower mass galaxies.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the nature of star-forming galaxies with reduced specific star formation rate (sSFR) and high stellar masses, those "green valley" objects that seemingly cause a reported bending, or flattening, of the star forming main sequence.

Intrinsic AGN SED & black hole growth in the Palomar-Green quasars
TL;DR: In this paper, a new analysis of the PG quasar sample based on Spitzer and Herschel observations is presented, where the authors use rough estimates of stellar mass, based on scaling relations, to divide the sample into groups: below and above the star formation main sequence (SFMS).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the effective radius of the rest-frame far-infrared (FIR) emission for 62 massive star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at z = 1.9-2.6 in the 3D-HST/CANDELS fields of UDS and GOODS-S.

Tracing galaxy populations through cosmic time: a critical test of methods for connecting the same galaxies between different redshifts at z < 3
TL;DR: In this article, a set of four semi-analytical models based on the output of the Millennium Simulation were used to find that selecting galaxies at a constant number density (in the range $-4.3 < \log n\ [\mathrm{Mpc}^{-3}\ h^{3}] < -3.0$) is superior to a constant mass selected sample, although it still has significant limitations.

TL;DR: Peebles as discussed by the authors argues that the evolution of the early universe went from a nearly uniform initial state to a progressively more irregular and clumpy universe, based on the largest known structures of the universe.

Energy input from quasars regulates the growth and activity of black holes and their host galaxies
TL;DR: Simulations that simultaneously follow star formation and the growth of black holes during galaxy–galaxy collisions find that, in addition to generating a burst of star formation, a merger leads to strong inflows that feed gas to the supermassive black hole and thereby power the quasar.
