TLDR
The findings show that the malaria mortality burden is larger than previously estimated, especially in adults, and there has been a rapid decrease in malaria mortality in Africa because of the scaling up of control activities supported by international donors.

4-(1H)-Quinolones and 1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroacridin-9(10H)-Ones Prevent the Transmission of Plasmodium falciparum to Anopheles freeborni

TL;DR: Findings suggest that 4(1H)-quinolones, which have activity against the blood stages, can also prevent the transmission of Plasmodium to the mosquito and, hence, are potentially important drug candidates to eradicate malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI

Facile synthesis of antimalarial 1,2-disubstituted 4-quinolones from 1,3-bisaryl-monothio-1,3-diketones.

TL;DR: A new strategy was developed to synthesize 1,2-disubstituted 4-quinolones in good yield starting from 1,3-bisaryl-monothio-1, 3-diketone substrates, and seven compounds exhibited an excellent antimalarial activity.

Malaria Vaccine Trials — Beyond Efficacy End Points

TL;DR: The first results of the phase 3 trial of the candidate malaria vaccine RTS,S/AS01 were reported for children 5 to 17 months of age at enrollment, with a vaccine efficacy of 56% against all clinical malaria infections and 47% against severe malaria during a trial.
Journal ArticleDOI

Liver immunology: How to reconcile tolerance with autoimmunity.

TL;DR: There are several examples of liver tolerance: the relative ease by which liver allografts are accepted and the exploitation of the hepatic microenvironment by the malarial parasite and hepatotrophic viruses are notable examples.

The global burden of disease: a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from diseases injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.

The global distribution of clinical episodes of Plasmodium falciparum malaria

TL;DR: It is estimated that there were 515 (range 300–660) million episodes of clinical P. falciparum malaria in 2002, up to 50% higher than those reported by the World Health Organization and 200% higher for areas outside Africa, reflecting the WHO's reliance upon passive national reporting for these countries.

Maternal mortality for 181 countries, 1980-2008: a systematic analysis of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5.

TL;DR: Although only 23 countries are on track to achieve a 75% decrease in MMR by 2015, countries such as Egypt, China, Ecuador, and Bolivia have been achieving accelerated progress and substantial, albeit varied, progress has been made towards MDG 5.
