TLDR
The findings show that the malaria mortality burden is larger than previously estimated, especially in adults, and there has been a rapid decrease in malaria mortality in Africa because of the scaling up of control activities supported by international donors.

Gene selective mRNA cleavage inhibits the development of Plasmodium falciparum

TL;DR: Positive proliferation assays showed that these PMO conjugates have potent antimalarial activity, blocking early development, maturation, and replication of the parasite.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synthesis and antimalarial evaluation of a screening library based on a tetrahydroanthraquinone natural product scaffold

TL;DR: A unique fungi-derived prefractionated library was screened against a chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum line (3D7) using a radiometric growth inhibition assay and a library fraction derived from a Cortinarius species displayed promising antimalarial activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Protective epitopes of the Plasmodium falciparum SERA5 malaria vaccine reside in intrinsically unstructured N-terminal repetitive sequences.

TL;DR: It is suggested that strict tertiary structure of SE36 epitopes is not required to elicit protective antibodies in naturally immune Ugandan adults and protein structure predictions and structural analysis of SE 36 indicated that N-terminal regions possessing inhibitory epitopes are intrinsically unstructured.

Anopheles gambiae Circumsporozoite Protein–Binding Protein Facilitates Plasmodium Infection of Mosquito Salivary Glands

TL;DR: In vivo bioassays showed that mosquitoes that were fed blood with CSPBP antibody displayed a 25% and 90% reduction in the parasite load in infected salivary glands 14 and 18 days after the blood meal, respectively, suggesting that CSP BP is important for the infection of the mosquitoSalivary gland by Plasmodium organisms and that blocking C SPBP can interfere with the PlasModium life cycle.

The global burden of disease: a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from diseases injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.
Journal ArticleDOI

The global distribution of clinical episodes of Plasmodium falciparum malaria

TL;DR: It is estimated that there were 515 (range 300–660) million episodes of clinical P. falciparum malaria in 2002, up to 50% higher than those reported by the World Health Organization and 200% higher for areas outside Africa, reflecting the WHO's reliance upon passive national reporting for these countries.

Maternal mortality for 181 countries, 1980-2008: a systematic analysis of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5.

TL;DR: Although only 23 countries are on track to achieve a 75% decrease in MMR by 2015, countries such as Egypt, China, Ecuador, and Bolivia have been achieving accelerated progress and substantial, albeit varied, progress has been made towards MDG 5.
