TLDR
The findings show that the malaria mortality burden is larger than previously estimated, especially in adults, and there has been a rapid decrease in malaria mortality in Africa because of the scaling up of control activities supported by international donors.

Biological assay of a novel quinoxalinone with antimalarial efficacy on Plasmodium yoelii yoelii.

TL;DR: The results obtained in this study showed that the infection outcome of P.Yoelii yoelii-infected mice is affected by VAM2-6 compound by slowing down the parasite replication, retarding the patency time, and increasing their survival time.
Journal ArticleDOI

A systematic review and synthesis of the strengths and limitations of measuring malaria mortality through verbal autopsy.

TL;DR: Given the need for data to measure progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016–2030 goals, the malaria community should define strategies for improving MM estimates, including exploring whether VA tools and methods could be further improved.
Journal ArticleDOI

Epidemiology of Malaria in Latin America and the Caribbean from 1990 to 2009: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

TL;DR: This study represents the first systematic review of the burden of malaria in Latin America and the Caribbean, with data from 21 countries, and shows an annual incidence rate of 409.0 malaria episodes/1000 person-years, considering all ages, which was 40-fold the one estimated from areas with passive surveillance only.
Journal ArticleDOI

Can plant biotechnology help break the HIV-malaria link?

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore some of the potential contributions of plant biotechnology and its integration into broader multidisciplinary public health programs to combat the two diseases in developing countries.

Expression of the Essential Kinase PfCDPK1 from Plasmodium falciparum in Toxoplasma gondii Facilitates the Discovery of Novel Antimalarial Drugs

TL;DR: A recombinant strain of Toxoplasma is established and validated and can be used as a surrogate for the discovery and analysis of PfCDPK1-specific inhibitors that can be developed as antimalarials.

The global burden of disease: a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from diseases injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.
Journal ArticleDOI

The global distribution of clinical episodes of Plasmodium falciparum malaria

TL;DR: It is estimated that there were 515 (range 300–660) million episodes of clinical P. falciparum malaria in 2002, up to 50% higher than those reported by the World Health Organization and 200% higher for areas outside Africa, reflecting the WHO's reliance upon passive national reporting for these countries.

Maternal mortality for 181 countries, 1980-2008: a systematic analysis of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5.

TL;DR: Although only 23 countries are on track to achieve a 75% decrease in MMR by 2015, countries such as Egypt, China, Ecuador, and Bolivia have been achieving accelerated progress and substantial, albeit varied, progress has been made towards MDG 5.
