Hierarchies from fluxes in string compactifications

TLDR
In this article, the authors show that the hierarchy of scales can be fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
Abstract
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type-IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierarchy reflects the small scale of chiral symmetry breaking in the dual gauge theory.

Understanding KKLT from a 10d perspective

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the de Sitter vacua constructions of the KKLT type cannot be dismissed simply based on the integrated 10d equations considered so far.

Moduli Stabilisation in Heterotic String Compactifications

TL;DR: In this article, the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure was analyzed and the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds were derived.

Volume Stabilization and the Origin of the Inflaton Shift Symmetry in String Theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify a class of models where the shift symmetry uniquely follows from the underlying mathematical structure of the theory, and show how the gauge coupling depends on the volume and the position of the branes.

Stability of D1-strings Inside a D3-brane

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that a D(p−2)-brane is stable inside Dp-branes when the bulk is compactified, and that it is a codimension-2 soliton of the Dpbrane action with coupling to the bulk (p−1)-form RR field.

SUGRA chaotic inflation and moduli stabilisation

TL;DR: In this paper, a SUGRA implementation of chaotic inflation in the presence of moduli fields is discussed, and it is shown that chaotic inflation does not work with a generic KKLT moduli stabilisation potential.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.

Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

TL;DR: In this paper, the weak scale is generated from the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy, but this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric, which is a slice of spacetime.

Superconformal field theory on threebranes at a Calabi-Yau singularity

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that string theory on AdS5 × X5 can be described by a certain N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theory, which we describe in detail.
