Hierarchies from fluxes in string compactifications

TLDR
In this article, the authors show that the hierarchy of scales can be fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
Abstract
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type-IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierarchy reflects the small scale of chiral symmetry breaking in the dual gauge theory.

Mirror Mediation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the effective action of string compactifications has a structure that can naturally solve the supersymmetric flavour and CP problems at leading order in the g_s and \alpha' expansions, the hidden sector factorises.

Oscillons from String Moduli

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss under which conditions oscillons can be produced in string cosmology and illustrate their production and potential phenomenology with two explicit examples: the case of an initially displaced volume modulus in the KKLT scenario and a displaced blow-up Kaehler modulus, in the Large Volume Scenario (LVS).

Minkowski 3-forms, Flux String Vacua, Axion Stability and Naturalness

TL;DR: In this article, the role of Minkowski 3-forms in flux string vacua is discussed, and it is shown that all RR and NS axion dependence of the flux scalar potential appears through the said 4-forms.

D6-branes and torsion

TL;DR: In this paper, the D6-brane spectrum of type IIA vacua based on twisted tori and RR background fluxes is analyzed, and the torsion factors of the (co)homology groups H_n and H_3 are computed.

Cycling in the throat

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyse the dynamics of a probe D3-(anti-)brane propagating in a warped string compactification, making use of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action approximation.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.

Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

TL;DR: In this paper, the weak scale is generated from the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy, but this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric, which is a slice of spacetime.

An Alternative to compactification

TL;DR: In this paper, a single 3-brane embedded in five dimensions was shown to reproduce four-dimensional Newtonian and general relativistic gravity to more than adequate precision, even without a gap in the Kaluza-Klein spectrum.

Supergravity and a confining gauge theory: duality cascades and χSB-resolution of naked singularities

TL;DR: In this article, a non-singular pure-supergravity background dual to the field theory on all scales, with small curvature everywhere if the ‘t Hooft coupling gsM is large, was proposed.

Superconformal field theory on threebranes at a Calabi-Yau singularity

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that string theory on AdS5 × X5 can be described by a certain N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theory, which we describe in detail.
