Hierarchies from fluxes in string compactifications

TLDR
In this article, the authors show that the hierarchy of scales can be fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
Abstract
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type-IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierarchy reflects the small scale of chiral symmetry breaking in the dual gauge theory.

Volume modulus inflection point inflation and the gravitino mass problem

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated several models of inflection point inflation with the volume modulus as the inflaton and found that the gravitino mass may be much smaller than the Hubble scale during inflation if at least one of the non-perturbative terms has a positive exponent.

The effective action of warped M-theory reductions with higher-derivative terms - Part II

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the three-dimensional effective action obtained by reducing eleven-dimensional supergravity with higher-derivative terms on a background solution including a warp-factor, an eight-dimensional compact manifold, and fluxes.

Nonrenormalization of flux superpotentials in string theory

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple non-renormalization theorem for a broad class of Type IIB vacua using the known symmetries of these compactifications was provided, which put them on a similar footing as the better-known nonrenormalisation theorems of heterotic vacua without fluxes.

AdS4 flux vacua in type II superstrings and their domain-wall solutions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the emergence of supersymmetric negative-vacuum-energy ground states in four dimensions, based on the analysis of the effective superpotential, which depends on the background fluxes of the internal manifold.

Lectures on Nongeometric Flux Compactifications

TL;DR: In this paper, a pedagogical review of nongeometric flux compactifications is presented based on lectures given at the 2007 RTN Winter School at CERN, where the authors argue that one must include non-geometric "fluxes" in order to have a superpotential which is invariant under T-duality.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.

Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

TL;DR: In this paper, the weak scale is generated from the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy, but this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric, which is a slice of spacetime.

An Alternative to compactification

TL;DR: In this paper, a single 3-brane embedded in five dimensions was shown to reproduce four-dimensional Newtonian and general relativistic gravity to more than adequate precision, even without a gap in the Kaluza-Klein spectrum.

Supergravity and a confining gauge theory: duality cascades and χSB-resolution of naked singularities

TL;DR: In this article, a non-singular pure-supergravity background dual to the field theory on all scales, with small curvature everywhere if the ‘t Hooft coupling gsM is large, was proposed.

Superconformal field theory on threebranes at a Calabi-Yau singularity

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that string theory on AdS5 × X5 can be described by a certain N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theory, which we describe in detail.
