Hierarchies from fluxes in string compactifications

TLDR
In this article, the authors show that the hierarchy of scales can be fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
Abstract
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type-IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierarchy reflects the small scale of chiral symmetry breaking in the dual gauge theory.

Dynamics of dark energy

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the observational evidence for the current accelerated expansion of the universe and present a number of dark energy models in addition to the conventional cosmological constant, paying particular attention to scalar field models such as quintessence, K-essence and tachyon.

De Sitter vacua in string theory

TL;DR: The metastable de Sitter vacua of type IIB string theory has been constructed in this article, which is a supersymmetric version of the ground state of the original ground state.

Towards inflation in string theory

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the embedding of brane inflation into stable compactifications of string theory and conclude that brane inflaton can only work if restrictive assumptions about the method of volume stabilization, the warping of the internal space, and the source of inflationary energy are satisfied.

Systematics of moduli stabilisation in Calabi-Yau flux compactifications

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the large volume limit of the scalar potential in Calabi-Yau flux compactifications of type IIB string theory, and they showed that there exists a limit in which the potential approaches zero from below, with an associated non-supersymmetric AdS minimum at exponentially large volume.
Journal ArticleDOI

DBI in the sky

TL;DR: In this article, the spectrum of density perturbations generated in models of the recently discovered "D-cceleration" mechanism of inflation was analyzed, and it was shown that the model has a strict lower bound on the non-Gaussianity of the CMBR power spectrum at an observable level.

On Supersymmetry Breaking in String Theory and its Realization in Brane Worlds

TL;DR: In this article, instanton induced spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in string compactifications with additional background fields is described, which can be explicitly calculated by geometric methods using string duality.

The SO(32) heterotic string on a K3 surface

TL;DR: In this paper, the SO(32) heterotic string on a K3 surface is analyzed in terms of the dual theory of a type II string (or F-theory) on an elliptically fibred Calabi-Yau manifold.

Supersymmetry and F-theory realization of the deformed conifold with three-form flux

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the deformed conifold solution with three-form flux is supersymmetric and admits a simple F-theory description in terms of a direct product of the conifolds and a torus.

Gravitational couplings and Z2 orientifolds

TL;DR: In this paper, the interplay between gravitational couplings on branes and the occurrence of fractional flux in low-dimensional orientifolds is examined, and it is argued that gravitational coupling need to be assigned not only to D-branes but also to orientifold planes.

A note on warped string compactification

TL;DR: In this paper, a short review of warped string geometries obtained via F-theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds is given, which upon reduction to 5 dimensions give consistent supersymmetric realizations of the RS compactification scenario.
