Hierarchies from fluxes in string compactifications

TLDR
In this article, the authors show that the hierarchy of scales can be fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
Abstract
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type-IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierarchy reflects the small scale of chiral symmetry breaking in the dual gauge theory.

Circumventing the eta problem in building an inflationary model in string theory

TL;DR: The eta problem is one of the most significant obstacles to building a successful inflationary model in string theory as discussed by the authors, and it is shown in the context of brane antibrane inflation in a warped throat of a Calabi-Yau flux compactification with all phenomenologically dangerous moduli stabilized.

Localised anti-branes in non-compact throats at zero and finite T

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the 3-form singularities that are typical to anti-brane solutions in supergravity and check whether they can be cloaked by a finite temperature horizon.

Cosmological moduli dynamics

TL;DR: In this article, a truncated low energy effective action that models the neighborhood of special points (or more generally loci) in moduli space, such as conifold points, where extra massless degrees of freedom arise is explored.

Dyonic masses from conformal field strengths in D even dimensions

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that D/2 -form gauge fields in D even dimensions can get a mass with both electric and magnetic contributions when coupled to conformal field-strengths whose gauge potentials are D − 2 2 2 -forms.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.

Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

TL;DR: In this paper, the weak scale is generated from the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy, but this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric, which is a slice of spacetime.

An Alternative to compactification

TL;DR: In this paper, a single 3-brane embedded in five dimensions was shown to reproduce four-dimensional Newtonian and general relativistic gravity to more than adequate precision, even without a gap in the Kaluza-Klein spectrum.

Supergravity and a confining gauge theory: duality cascades and χSB-resolution of naked singularities

TL;DR: In this article, a non-singular pure-supergravity background dual to the field theory on all scales, with small curvature everywhere if the ‘t Hooft coupling gsM is large, was proposed.

Superconformal field theory on threebranes at a Calabi-Yau singularity

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that string theory on AdS5 × X5 can be described by a certain N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theory, which we describe in detail.
