Hierarchies from fluxes in string compactifications

TLDR
In this article, the authors show that the hierarchy of scales can be fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds.
Abstract
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of type-IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierarchy reflects the small scale of chiral symmetry breaking in the dual gauge theory.

Testing string theory with cosmic microwave background

TL;DR: The tensor detection of tensor modes from inflation in cosmic microwave background observations presents a unique way to test certain features of string theory as mentioned in this paper, and the current limit on the ratio of tensors to scalar perturbations, r = T/S, is ; future detection may take place for −10−3.

De Sitter from T-branes

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a higher-dimensional understanding of known 4D mechanisms of de Sitter uplifting based on hidden sector F-terms which are non-zero because of D-term stabilisation.

de Sitter Space in Non-Critical String Theory

TL;DR: In this article, supercritical string theories in D>10 dimensions with no moduli are described, generalizing the asymmetric orientifold construction of one of the authors, where dilaton potentials are generated with nontrivial minima at arbitrarily small cosmological constant and D-dimensional string coupling, separated by a barrier from a flat-space linear dilaton region.

Inflating in a Better Racetrack

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a new version of the racetrack inflation model, which is based on an explicit compactification of type IIB string theory, and obtain the COBE-normalized spectrum of metric perturbations and an inflationary scale of 3 × 1014 GeV.

D-brane Deconstructions in IIB Orientifolds

TL;DR: In this paper, the landscape of D7-branes in type IIB compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds, in three different pictures: F-theory, the D7 worldvolume theory and D9-anti-D9 tachyon condensation, is analyzed.

The Large N limit of superconformal field theories and supergravity

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the large-N limits of certain conformal field theories in various dimensions include in their Hilbert space a sector describing supergravityon the product of anti-de Sitter spacetimes, spheres, and other compact manifolds.

Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension

TL;DR: In this paper, the weak scale is generated from the Planck scale through an exponential hierarchy, but this exponential arises not from gauge interactions but from the background metric, which is a slice of spacetime.

An Alternative to compactification

TL;DR: In this paper, a single 3-brane embedded in five dimensions was shown to reproduce four-dimensional Newtonian and general relativistic gravity to more than adequate precision, even without a gap in the Kaluza-Klein spectrum.

Supergravity and a confining gauge theory: duality cascades and χSB-resolution of naked singularities

Superconformal field theory on threebranes at a Calabi-Yau singularity

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that string theory on AdS5 × X5 can be described by a certain N = 1 supersymmetric gauge theory, which we describe in detail.
