TLDR
In this article, the product-limit (PL) estimator was proposed to estimate the proportion of items in the population whose lifetimes would exceed t (in the absence of such losses), without making any assumption about the form of the function P(t).Abstract:
In lifetesting, medical follow-up, and other fields the observation of the time of occurrence of the event of interest (called a death) may be prevented for some of the items of the sample by the previous occurrence of some other event (called a loss). Losses may be either accidental or controlled, the latter resulting from a decision to terminate certain observations. In either case it is usually assumed in this paper that the lifetime (age at death) is independent of the potential loss time; in practice this assumption deserves careful scrutiny. Despite the resulting incompleteness of the data, it is desired to estimate the proportion P(t) of items in the population whose lifetimes would exceed t (in the absence of such losses), without making any assumption about the form of the function P(t). The observation for each item of a suitable initial event, marking the beginning of its lifetime, is presupposed. For random samples of size N the product-limit (PL) estimate can be defined as follows: L...read more

Sexual assault and mental disorders in a community population.
M. A. Burnam,Judith A. Stein,J. M. Golding,Judith M. Siegel,Susan B. Sorenson,A. B. Forsythe,C. A. Telles +6 more
TL;DR: A cross-sectional probability survey of 3132 household adults was conducted in two Los Angeles communities in order to examine the relationship between sexual assault and prevalence of 9 major mental disorders as mentioned in this paper.

Thymidylate synthase gene polymorphism determines response and toxicity of 5-FU chemotherapy.

TL;DR: The data suggest that genotyping for the TS polymorphism may have the potential to identify patients more likely to respond to 5-FU based chemotherapy, and to predict clinical outcome of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated with 5-fluorouracil.

Predictive value of tumor thickness in squamous carcinoma confined to the tongue and floor of the mouth

TL;DR: Assessment of tumor thickness using an optical micrometer to measure the thickness in millimeters of the excised tumors in routinely prepared paraffin sections confirms that increasing tumor thickness, rather than tumor stage, had the best correlation with treatment failure and survival.

TL;DR: Twenty additional patients with biopsy proven osteogenic sarcoma have been treated with more aggressive preoperative chemotherapy for approximately 2 1/2 months prior to definitive surgery (resection or amputation) and all 20 patients are surviving free of active disease at this brief follow‐up period of 4–20 months.
