Savanna Vegetation-Fire-Climate Relationships Differ Among Continents
Caroline E. R. Lehmann,Caroline E. R. Lehmann,T. Michael Anderson,Mahesh Sankaran,Mahesh Sankaran,Steven I. Higgins,Steven I. Higgins,Sally Archibald,Sally Archibald,William A. Hoffmann,Niall P. Hanan,Richard J. Williams,Roderick J. Fensham,Jeanine Maria Felfili,Lindsay B. Hutley,Jayashree Ratnam,José J. San José,R. Montes,Donald C. Franklin,Jeremy Russell-Smith,Casey M. Ryan,Giselda Durigan,Pierre Hiernaux,Ricardo Flores Haidar,David M. J. S. Bowman,William J. Bond +25 more
TL;DR: Using data from 2154 sites in savannas across Africa, Australia, and South America, it is found that increasing moisture availability drives increases in fire and tree basal area, whereas fire reduces tree basal Area.
Journal ArticleDOI
Savanna woody encroachment is widespread across three continents
TL;DR: It is argued that the functional traits of each woody flora, specifically the N-fixing ability and architecture of woody plants, are critical to predicting encroachment over the next century and that African savannas are at high risk of widespread vegetation change.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: It is shown that most tree species are extremely rare, meaning that they may be under serious risk of extinction at current deforestation rates, and a methodological framework for estimating species richness in trees is provided that may help refine species richness estimates of tree-dependent taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toward an old-growth concept for grasslands, savannas, and woodlands
Joseph W. Veldman,Elise Buisson,Giselda Durigan,G. Wilson Fernandes,G. Wilson Fernandes,Soizig Le Stradic,Grégory Mahy,Daniel Negreiros,Gerhard E. Overbeck,Robin Globus Veldman,Nicholas P. Zaloumis,Francis E. Putz,William J. Bond +12 more
TL;DR: The concept of "old growth" was introduced by as mentioned in this paper to encompass the distinct ecologies and conservation values of the world's ancient grass-dominated biomes, which has the potential to improve scientific understanding, conservation policies and ecosystem management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Where Tree Planting and Forest Expansion are Bad for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
Joseph W. Veldman,Gerhard E. Overbeck,Daniel Negreiros,Grégory Mahy,Soizig Le Stradic,G. Wilson Fernandes,Giselda Durigan,Elise Buisson,Francis E. Putz,William J. Bond +9 more
TL;DR: The authors showed that the World Resources Institute and the International Union for Conservation of Nature misidentified 9 million square kilometers of ancient grassy biomes as providing "Opportunities" for forest restoration.
