Abstract: Waste collection and management is an integrated part of both city and village life. Lack of optimized and efficient waste collection system vastly affect public health and costs more. The prevailing traditional waste collection system is neither optimized nor efficient. Internet of Things (IoT) has been playing a great role in making human life easier by making systems smart, adequate and self-sufficient. Thus, this paper proposes an IoT based efficient waste collection system with smart bins. It does real-time monitoring of the waste bins and determines which bins are to emptied in every cycle of waste collection. The system also presents an enhanced navigation system that shows the best route to collect wastes from the selected bins. Four waste bins are assumed in the city of Mount Pleasant, Michigan at random location. The proposed system decreases the travel distance by 30.76% on an average in the assumed scenario, compared to the traditional waste collection system. Thus it reduces the fuel cost and human labor making the system optimized and efficient by enabling real-time monitoring and enhanced navigation.

Abstract: Moisture adsorption in the coal seams affects the gas adsorption capacity and can alter the coal deformation and permeability criteria of the coal seam. The effect of dynamic loss of moisture content, both on moisture and gas sorption-induced coal swelling/shrinkage strains, during the coalbed methane (CBM) production, is crucial. This study investigates the interactions among coal matrix, absorbed gas, and moisture content, based on the coal swelling/shrinkage strains and gas adsorption decay criteria. Consequently, a mathematical model of the coal deformation is developed for the proper evaluation of the moisture effect. For developing the model, this paper considers the standard gas flow and moisture loss equations to assess the volumetric content, equilibrium pressure, and density of the moisture. Finally, it comprehensively analyzes the sensitive factors and effects of elemental parameters of moisture content on coal deformation and coal permeability. The results show that moisture content at adsorbed state significantly changes the coal swelling/shrinkage strain and that distorted swelling and shrinkage characteristics can promote the permeability alternation in wet coal reservoirs. Moreover, the intermolecular attraction between the coal structure and the moisture content has a significant effect on methane adsorption/desorption-induced deformation in coal structure. This study also designs the coal deformation strains as a function of moisture content by the Langmuir type model and evaluates the hysteresis rate between the swelling and shrinkage characteristics. The findings of this paper can characterize a wet coal reserve for CBM production and anticipate future production under different operating conditions.

Abstract: In recent years, rainfall induced ‘urban storm water-logging’ (USWL) events are experiencing in Chittagong city like other urbanized parts of Bangladesh. To mitigate this there is an urgent need to predict the USWL beforehand and a numerical model could help. Thus, this paper aimed to use a hydrological model i.e. HEC-HMS through field survey during 2013–2014 and a questionnaire survey. With the support of secondary data source viz. daily newspaper, intensive questionnaire survey and field visits identified 13 most vulnerable USWL locations and based on these a USWL depth–duration–frequency curve was developed. This showed during water logging (i.e. May–July), the depth of logged water rises 0.3–1.27 m causing adjacent dwellers sufferings upto 13 times per year and the inundation period is up to 48 h. Using these, HEC-HMS model was setup and the correlation obtained with the field measurement as R2 values 0.83 and 0.77 during calibration and verification period respectively. Once a real time hydrological dataset is available, the validated model supposed to provide useful information in the decision support system.

Abstract: This work investigates the oblique nonlinear propagation of ion acoustic (IA) shock waves for both weakly and highly relativistic plasmas composed of nonthermal electrons and positrons with relativistic thermal ions. The KdVB-like equation, involving dispersive, weakly transverse dispersive, nonlinearity and dissipative coefficients, is derived employing the well known reductive perturbation method. The integration of this equation is carried out by the $\mathit{tanh}$ method taking the stable shock formation condition into account. The effects of nonthermal electrons and positrons, nonthermal electrons with isothermal positrons, isothermal electrons with nonthermal positrons, and isothermal electrons and positrons on oblique propagation of IA shock waves in weakly relativistic regime are described. Furthermore, the effects of plasma parameters on oblique propagation of IA shock waves in highly relativistic regime are discussed and compared with weakly relativistic case. It is seen that the plasma parameters within certain limits significantly modify the structures of the IA shock waves in both cases. The results may be useful for better understanding of the interactions of charged particles with extra-galactic jets as well as astrophysical compact objects.

Abstract: Environmental flows have scarcely been considered in river water management in Bangladesh. This study attempts to assess the environmental flow requirements in the Halda River, Bangladesh. Thus, the objectives are to estimate the Halda River flow with different return periods/probabilities, which was done using the log-Pearson Type III distribution (LPIII), and to mitigate the environmental problems in the Halda River using the building block method. The LPIII distribution was used to estimate the expected extreme and satisfactory flows for fish habitat at Panchpukuria station and the expected extreme water levels at Panchpukuria, Narayanhat, Telpari and Enayethat stations. It was found that floods are likely to occur at least once in 2.1, 1.02, 1.75 and 1.25 years at Panchpukuria, Narayanhat, Telpari and Enayethat stations, respectively.
