Abstract: In code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems transmitting over time-varying multipath channels, both intersymbol interference (ISI) and multiple-access interference (MAI) arise. The conventional suboptimum receiver consisting of a bank of matched filters is often inefficient because interference is treated as noise. The optimum multiuser detector is too complex to be implemented at present. Four suboptimum detection techniques based on zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) equalization with and without decision feedback (DF) are presented and compared. They combat both ISI and MAI. The computational complexity of all four equalizers is essentially the same. All four equalizers are independent of the size of the data symbol alphabet. It is shown that the performance of the MMSE equalizers is better than that of the corresponding ZF equalizers. Furthermore, the performance of the equalizers with DF is better than that of the corresponding equalizers without DF. The impairing effect of error propagation on the equalizers with DF is reduced by channel sorting.

Abstract: This paper is a direct continuation of [1] where we began the study of the integrable structures in Conformal Field Theory. We show here how to construct the operators ${\bf Q}_{\pm}(\lambda)$ which act in the highest weight Virasoro module and commute for different values of the parameter λ. These operators appear to be the CFT analogs of the Q - matrix of Baxter [2], in particular they satisfy Baxter's famous T- Q equation. We also show that under natural assumptions about analytic properties of the operators as the functions of λ the Baxter's relation allows one to derive the nonlinear integral equations of Destri-de Vega (DDV) [3] for the eigenvalues of the Q-operators. We then use the DDV equation to obtain the asymptotic expansions of the Q - operators at large λ; it is remarkable that unlike the expansions of the T operators of [1], the asymptotic series for Q(λ) contains the “dual” nonlocal Integrals of Motion along with the local ones. We also discuss an intriguing relation between the vacuum eigenvalues of the Q - operators and the stationary transport properties in the boundary sine-Gordon model. On this basis we propose a number of new exact results about finite voltage charge transport through the point contact in the quantum Hall system.

Abstract: The DNA damage-dependent poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases, PARP-1 and PARP-2, homo- and heterodimerize and are both involved in the base excision repair (BER) pathway. Here, we report that mice carrying a targeted disruption of the PARP-2 gene are sensitive to ionizing radiation. Following alkylating agent treatment, parp-2(-/-)-derived mouse embryonic fibroblasts exhibit increased post-replicative genomic instability, G(2)/M accumulation and chromosome mis-segregation accompanying kinetochore defects. Moreover, parp-1(-/-)parp-2(-/-) double mutant mice are not viable and die at the onset of gastrulation, demonstrating that the expression of both PARP-1 and PARP-2 and/or DNA-dependent poly(ADP-ribosyl) ation is essential during early embryogenesis. Interestingly, specific female embryonic lethality is observed in parp-1(+/-)parp-2(-/-) mutants at E9.5. Meta phase analyses of E8.5 embryonic fibroblasts highlight a specific instability of the X chromosome in those females, but not in males. Together, these results support the notion that PARP-1 and PARP-2 possess both overlapping and non-redundant functions in the maintenance of genomic stability.

Abstract: The agent responsible for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) is thought to be a malfolded, protease-resistant version (PrPres) of the normal cellular prion protein (PrP). The interspecies transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to mice was studied. Although all of the mice injected with homogenate from BSE-infected cattle brain exhibited neurological symptoms and neuronal death, more than 55 percent had no detectable PrPres. During serial passage, PrPres appeared after the agent became adapted to the new host. Thus, PrPres may be involved in species adaptation, but a further unidentified agent may actually transmit BSE.
