Abstract: Balancing of loading of cells in a cellular mobile radio telephone system is performed by periodically determining the channel utilization of each cell, computing a representative voice channel occupancy level, and attempting to hand-off calls from cells with higher voice channels occupancy levels to adjacent cells with lower voice channel occupancy levels. Voice channel occupancy levels of cells are measured and compared with threshold values, and the results of the comparisons are used to direct cells to enter predetermined states. In one state, complete cell blockage is prevented by directing cells to hand-off calls to adjacent cells. In another state, voice channels are preserved for incoming hand-offs by directing the cell to deny access to mobile transceivers initiating new calls. Cells may assume a combined stage wherein both of these functions are performed simultaneously. Cells are selected as hand-off candidates for hand-offs initiated to more evenly distribute loading throughout the cellular system in accordance with cell state (i.e., voice channel occupancy level) and measured signal strength at the cells of the calls attempted to be handed off.

Abstract: Triarylsulfonium salts Ar3S+MXn− with complex metal halide anions such as BF4−, AsF6−, PF6−, and SbF6− are a new class of highly efficient photoinitiators for cationic polymerization. In this article we describe several synthetic routes to the preparation of these compounds along with their physical and spectroscopic properties. Mechanistic studies have shown that when these compounds are irradiated at wavelengths of 190–365 nm carbon-sulfur bond cleavage occurs to form radical fragments. At the same time the strong Brϕnsted acid HMXn, which is the active initiator of cationic polymerization that takes place in subsequent “dark” steps, is also produced. A study of the parameters that affect the photolysis of triarylsulfonium salts is reported with a measurement of the absolute quantum yields. The cationic polymerizations of four typical monomers—styrene oxide, cyclohexene oxide, tetrahydrofuran, and 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether—with triarylsulfonium salt photoinitiators are described.

Abstract: Implanted surgical metal clips often produce objectionable artifacts in CT reconstructions. The artifacts appear as streaks which emanate radially from the site of the clip. It is shown in this paper that these artifacts stem primarily from motion of the clip during the scan. An algorithm is described which reduces the intensity of these artifacts. The procedure attempts to remove the metal object entirely from the scan data by replacing the measured projection values of rays that passed through a neighborhood of the clip with calculated values consistent with an object whose density is an average of the surround. Examples are given for head and body scans as well as for computer simulations which show substantial reduction of the streak intensity.
