Abstract: Output pulses from an optical system having a seed source and an optical amplifier coupled to the seed source may be controlled by controlling a power of a seed signal from the seed source. The seed signal may be varied between a minimum value and a maximum value in a way that the seed signal exhibits one or more pulse bursts. Each pulse burst may contain one or more pulses. During an inter-pulse period between successive pulses within a pulse burst or between successive pulse bursts, the power of the seed signal may be adjusted to an intermediate value that is greater than the minimum value and less than the maximum value. The intermediate value is chosen to control a gain in the optical amplifier such that a pulse or pulse burst that follows the period exhibits a desired behavior.

Abstract: The simultaneous flow of two phases through a three-dimensional porous medium is calculated by means of a Lattice-Boltzmann algorithm. The time-dependent phase configurations can be derived and also macroscopic quantities such as the relative permeabilities. When one phase only is supposed to be conductive, the Laplace equation which governs electrical conduction can be solved in each phase configuration; an instantaneous value of the macroscopic conductivity is obtained and it is averaged over many configurations. The influence of saturation on the resistivity index is studied for six different samples and two viscosity ratios. The saturation exponent is systematically determined. The numerical results are also compared to other possible models and also to experimental results; finally, they are discussed and criticized.

Abstract: Using a subharmonic optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on orientation-patterned GaAs, we produced a broadband instantaneous output that spans 3.6-5.6 μm at 50-dB level (4.4-5.2 μm at 3 dB level), has 110 mW of average power, and is suitable for producing wideband-frequency combs in the mid-infrared. The OPO was synchronously pumped by a compact Kerr-lens mode-locked femtosecond Cr:ZnS oscillator with the central wavelength 2.38 μm and pulse repetition frequency 175 MHz.

Abstract: In coral islands, groundwater is a crucial freshwater resource for terrestrial life, including human water supply. Response of the freshwater lens to expected climate changes and subsequent vegetation alterations is quantified for Grande Glorieuse, a low-lying coral island in the Western Indian Ocean. Distributed models of recharge, evapotranspiration and saltwater phytotoxicity are integrated into a variable-density groundwater model to simulate the evolution of groundwater salinity. Model results are assessed against field observations including groundwater and geophys-ical measurements. Simulations show the major control currently exerted by the vegetation with regards to the lens morphology and the high sensitivity of the lens to climate alterations, impacting both quantity and salin-ity. Long-term changes in mean sea level and climatic conditions (rainfall and evapotranspiration) are predicted to be responsible for an average increase in salinity approaching 140 % (+8 kg m −3) when combined. In low-lying areas with high vegetation density, these changes top +300 % (+10 kg m −3). However, due to salinity increase and its phytotoxicity, it is shown that a corollary drop in vegetation activity can buffer the alteration of fresh groundwater. This illustrates the importance of accounting for vegetation dynamics to study groundwater in coral islands.
