Abstract: [1] This study investigated the detailed geomagnetic field variation between 21 and 275 Ma from a sediment core (IODP Site U1314) with high sedimentation rate (≥10 cm/kyr) and good age control Characteristic remanent magnetization directions were well resolved by stepwise alternating field demagnetization As a proxy of relative paleointensity, natural remanent magnetization (NRM) normalized by anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) was used after testing that the influence of magnetic interaction in ARM is negligible As a result, the following features of the geomagnetic field in the studied period have been revealed During the transition of the Gauss-Matuyama (G-M) reversal and the Reunion Subchron, the paleointensity decreased to the value lower than 20% of the average intensity in the whole studied interval In addition to these lows, eight paleointensity lows were found associated with large directional changes that satisfy the definition of a geomagnetic excursion Four of these have ages close to ages reported for geomagnetic excursions in prior studies, whereas the other four excursions have not previously been observed In our results, we confirm that the G-M transition occurred in marine isotope stage 103 even if we consider the shift in depth due to the lock-in process of magnetic particles The temporal variation in paleointensity showed asymmetric behavior associated with the G-M transition, with a gradual decrease prior to the transition and a rapid recovery after the transition

Abstract: The stochastic effects of assist gas in QCW and pulsed laser machining (percussion drilling) in steel are measured with a
novel in situ high speed low coherence imaging system. Real-time imaging is delivered coaxially with machining energy
and assist gas revealing relaxation and melt flow dynamics over microsecond timescales and millimeter length scales
with ~10 micrometer resolution. Direct measurement of cut rate and repeatability avoids post cut analysis and iterative
process development. Feedback from the imaging system can be used to overcome variations in relaxation and guides
blind hole cutting.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate dynamo action in three-dimensional numerical simulations of turbulent spherical Couette flows and show that the magnetic field exhibits an intermittent behavior, characterized by a series of short bursts of the magnetic energy separated by low-energy phases.
Abstract: We investigate dynamo action in three-dimensional numerical simulations of turbulent spherical Couette flows. Close to the onset of dynamo action, the magnetic field exhibits an intermittent behavior, characterized by a series of short bursts of the magnetic energy separated by low-energy phases. We show that this behavior corresponds to the so-called on-off intermittency. This behavior is here reported for dynamo action with realistic boundary conditions. We investigate the role of magnetic boundary conditions in this phenomenon.

TL;DR: The Hopf algebra of renormalization in quantum field theory is described at a general level in this paper, where the products of fields at a point are assumed to form a bialgebra B and renormalisation endows T ( T ( B ) + ), the double tensor algebra of B, with the structure of a noncommutative bial algebra.

TL;DR: In this article, a palaeomagnetic study was carried out in the Moscovian (y305 Ma) formation in the Edjeleh anticline, the only area where important dips can be observed in the Upper Palaeozoic series of the Illizi basin (Algeria).
Abstract: SUMMARY A palaeomagnetic study was carried out in the Moscovian (y305 Ma) formation in the Edjeleh anticline, the only area where important dips can be observed in the Upper Palaeozoic series of the Illizi basin (Algeria). This study shows the existence of three magnetization components. Two of them are interpreted as Cenozoic and Permian remagnetizations; their poles are 88.8uN, 164.0uE, K=262, A95=3.3u and 43.4uS, 61.7uE, K=93, A95=5.9u, respectively. The third component is determined by both welldefined ChRMs and remagnetization circles analysis. Its associated fold test is positive and significant. Because the folding started before or during the Autunian, this third component was acquired very early and is very probably the primary magnetization. Its corresponding palaeomagnetic pole (28.3uS, 58.9uE, K=157, A95=4.2u) is close to the poles from the Saharan platform obtained from neighbouring periods. The positive fold test of this study thus validates these previous Upper Palaeozoic poles. This new result is in agreement with the geodynamical model (Matte 1986; Henry et al. 1992), which proposed the occurrence of a large clockwise rotation of Africa during the Carboniferous; such a motion agrees with the Permian Pangaea A2 reconstruction.
