Abstract: The detection of thyroid nodules has become more common with the widespread use of ultrasonography (US). US is the mainstay for detecting and making the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules as well as for providing guidance for a biopsy. The Task Force on Thyroid Nodules of the Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology has developed recommendations for the US diagnosis and US-based management of thyroid nodules. The review and recommendations in this report have been based on a comprehensive analysis of the current literature, the results of multicenter studies and from the consensus of experts.

Abstract: Although successful for a limited number of tumour types, the efficacy of cancer therapies, especially for late-stage disease, remains poor overall. Many have argued that this could be avoided by focusing on cancer prevention, which has now entered the arena of targeted therapies. During the process of identifying preventive agents, dietary phytochemicals, which are thought to be safe for human use, have emerged as modulators of key cellular signalling pathways. The task now is to understand how these chemicals perturb these pathways by modelling their interactions with their target proteins.

Abstract: The thermal conductivity of suspended single-layer graphene was measured as a function of temperature using Raman scattering spectroscopy on clean samples prepared directly on a prepatterned substrate by mechanical exfoliation without chemical treatments. The temperature at the laser spot was monitored by the frequency of the Raman 2$D$ band of the Raman scattering spectrum, and the thermal conductivity was deduced by analyzing heat diffusion equations assuming that the substrate is a heat sink at ambient temperature. The obtained thermal conductivity values range from $~$1800 W m${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$K${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ near 325 K to $~$710 W m${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$K${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at 500 K.

Abstract: A search for events with jets and missing transverse energy is performed in a data sample of pp collisions collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.14 inverse femtobarns. In this search, a kinematic variable, alphaT, is used as the main discriminator between events with genuine and misreconstructed missing transverse energy. No excess of events over the standard model expectation is found. Exclusion limits in the parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model are set. In this model, squark masses below 1.1 TeV are excluded at 95% CL. Gluino masses below 1.1 TeV are also ruled out at 95% CL for values of the universal scalar mass parameter below 500 GeV.

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the subfoveal choroidal thickness in the fellow eyes of patients with CSC, a disease often associated with choroidal vascular hyperpermeability even in eyes without subretinal fluid. Methods: In this observational cross-sectional study, we measured the bilateral subfoveal choroidal thickness in patients with unilateral CSC using enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Areas of choroidal vascular hyperpermeability were visualized with indocyanine green angiography. Results: Sixty-six consecutive Japanese patients (50 men, 16 women; mean age, 52.8 years) with unilateral CSC were examined. The subfoveal choroid in symptomatic eyes was significantly thicker than that in fellow eye (414 ± 109 μm vs. 350 ± 116 μm, P < 0.001, respectively). The subfoveal choroid of eyes with choroidal vascular hyperpermeability was 410 ± 92 μm, which differed significantly (P < 0.001) from the choroid (239 ± 59 μm) of fellow eyes without choroidal vascular hyperpermeability. Conclusion: The subfoveal choroid in the fellow eyes of patients with CSC was thicker in the eyes with choroidal vascular hyperpermeability. Enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography can assess the effects of choroidal vascular hyperpermeability by measuring the choroidal thickness noninvasively.

Abstract: Graphene produced by exfoliation has not been able to provide an ideal graphene with performance comparable to that predicted by theory, and structural and/or electronic defects have been proposed as one cause of reduced performance. We report the observation of domains on exfoliated monolayer graphene that differ by their friction characteristics, as measured by friction force microscopy. Angle-dependent scanning revealed friction anisotropy with a periodicity of 180° on each friction domain. The friction anisotropy decreased as the applied load increased. We propose that the domains arise from ripple distortions that give rise to anisotropic friction in each domain as a result of the anisotropic puckering of the graphene.

Abstract: The diterpenoid phytohormone gibberellin (GA) controls diverse developmental processes throughout the plant life cycle. DELLA proteins are master growth repressors that function immediately downstream of the GA receptor to inhibit GA signaling. By doing so, DELLAs also play pivotal roles as integrators of internal developmental signals from multiple hormone pathways and external cues. DELLAs are likely nuclear transcriptional regulators, which interact with other transcription factors to modulate expression of GA-responsive genes. DELLAs are also involved in maintaining GA homeostasis through feedback up-regulating expression of GA biosynthesis and receptor genes. However, the molecular mechanisms by which DELLAs restrict growth and development are largely unknown. This study reveals an important step of the mechanism. Previous microarray studies identified SCARECROW-LIKE 3 (SCL3) as a direct target gene of DELLA in Arabidopsis seedlings. SCL3 expression is induced by DELLA and repressed by GA. Unexpectedly, a scl3 null mutant displays reduced GA responses and elevated expression of GA biosynthesis genes during seed germination and seedling growth, indicating that SCL3 functions as a positive regulator of GA signaling. SCL3 seems to act as an attenuator of DELLA proteins. Transient expression, ChIP, and co-IP studies show that SCL3 autoregulates its own transcription by directly interacting with DELLA. Our data further show that SCL3 and DELLA antagonize each other in controlling both downstream GA responses and upstream GA biosynthetic genes. This work is beginning to shed light on how this complex regulatory network achieves GA homeostasis and controls GA-mediated growth and development in the plant.

Abstract: Human health relies on the composition of microbiota in an individual’s gut and the synthesized metabolites that may alter the gut environment. Gut microbiota and faecal metabolites are involved in several gastrointestinal diseases. In this study, 16S rRNA-specific denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and quantitative PCR analysis showed that the mean similarity of total bacteria was significantly different (P 0.05). GC/MS-based multivariate analysis delineated the faecal metabolites of IBS from nIBS samples. Elevated levels of amino acids (alanine and pyroglutamic acid) and phenolic compounds (hydroxyphenyl acetate and hydroxyphenyl propionate) were found in IBS. These results were highly correlated with the abundance of lactobacilli and Clostridium, which indicates an altered metabolism rate associated with these gut micro-organisms. A higher diversity of Bacteroidetes and Lactobacillus groups in IBS faecal samples also correlated with the respective total quantity. In addition, these changes altered protein and carbohydrate energy metabolism in the gut.

Abstract: It is essential to estimate how much power can be delivered from vehicles to grid, called achievable power capacity (APC), for practical vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. We propose a method of estimating the APC in a probabilistic manner. Its probability distribution is obtained from the normal approximation to the binomial distribution, and hence represented with two parameters, i.e., mean and covariance. Based on the probability distribution of the APC, we calculate the power capacity that V2G regulation providers (or V2G aggregators) are contracted to provide grid operators with, called the contracted power capacity (CPC). Four possible contract types between a grid operator and a V2G regulation provider are suggested and, for each contract type, a profit function is developed from the APC and the penalty imposed to the V2G aggregator. The CPCs for four contract types are chosen to maximize the corresponding profit functions. Finally, simulations are provided to illustrate the accuracy of the estimated probability distribution of APC and the effectiveness of the profit functions.

Abstract: During plant development, because no cell movement takes place, control of the timing and extent of cell division and coordination of the direction and extent of cell expansion are particularly important for growth and development. The plant hormone gibberellins (GAs) play key roles in the control of these developmental processes. However, little is known about the molecular components that integrate the generic GA signaling into a specific cell/tissue to coordinate cell division and cell expansion. Here we report that SCARECROW-LIKE 3 (SCL3), a GRAS protein, acts as a positive regulator to integrate and maintain a functional GA pathway by attenuating the DELLA repressors in the root endodermis. The tissue-specific maintenance of GA signaling in the root endodermis plays distinct roles along the longitudinal root axis. While in the elongation/differentiation zone (EDZ), the endodermis-confined GA pathway by SCL3 controls primarily coordination of root cell elongation; in the meristem zone (MZ) SCL3 in conjunction with the SHORT-ROOT/SCARECROW (SHR/SCR) pathway controls GA-modulated ground tissue maturation. Our findings highlight the regulatory network of the GRAS transcription regulators (SCL3, DELLAs, and SHR/SCR) in the root endodermis, shedding light on how GA homeostasis is achieved and how the maintenance of GA signaling controls developmental processes in roots.

Abstract: A measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry in inclusive pp to WX production at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV is presented based on data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. This high precision measurement of the lepton charge asymmetry, performed in both the W to e nu and W to mu nu channels, provides new insights into parton distribution functions.

Abstract: We investigated the prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the factors associate with risk of dementia from a representative nationwide sample of Korean elders. 8,199 randomly-sampled Koreans aged 65 years or older were invited to participate in the Phase I screening assessment using Mini-Mental State Examination by door-to-door home visit, and 6,141 subjects (response rate = 74.9%) responded. Among them, 2,336 subjects were invited to participate in the Phase II diagnostic assessment for dementia and MCI, and 1,673 subjects responded (response rate = 71.6%). Diagnostic assessments were administered using the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Packet (CERAD-K) Clinical Assessment Battery. The CERAD-K Neuropsychological Assessment Battery was used for diagnosing MCI. Age-, gender-, education-, and urbanicity-standardized prevalence of dementia was estimated to be 8.1% (95% CI = 6.9-9.2) for overall dementia and 24.1% (95% CI = 21.0-27.2) for MCI. Alzheimer's disease (AD) was the most prevalent type (5.7%) followed by vascular dementia (2.0%). Amnestic subtype (20.1%) was much more prevalent than nonamnestic subtype in MCI (4.0%). Older age, being male, lower education level, illiteracy, smoking, and histories of head trauma or depression were associated with increased dementia risk, and alcohol use and moderately intense exercise were associated with decreased dementia risk. We expect numbers of dementia patients to double every 20 years until 2050 in Korea and expect AD to account for progressively more dementia cases in the future.

Abstract: The presence of malignant ascites in the peritoneal cavity is a poor prognostic indicator of low survival rate. Various cancer cells, including those of colorectal cancer (CRC), release microvesicles (exosomes) into surrounding tissues and peripheral circulation including malignant ascites. Although recent progress has revealed that microvesicles play multiple roles in tumor progression, the protein composition and the pathological function of malignant ascites-derived microvesicles are still unknown. Here, we report the first global proteomic analyses of highly purified microvesicles derived from human CRC ascites. With 1-D SDS-PAGE and nano-LC-MS/MS analyses, we identified a total of 846 microvesicular proteins from ascites of three CRC patients with high confidence; 384 proteins were identified in at least two patients. We identified proteins that might function in tumor progression via disruption of epithelial polarity, migration, invasion, tumor growth, immune modulation, and angiogenesis. Furthermore, we identified several potential diagnostic markers of CRC including colon-specific surface antigens. Our proteomic analyses will help to elucidate diverse functions of microvesicles in cancer progression and will aid in the development of novel diagnostic tools for CRC.

Abstract: To evaluate the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of adenosine-stress dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for detecting haemodynamically significant stenosis causing reversible myocardial perfusion defect (PD) compared with stress perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (SP-MRI) and conventional coronary angiography (CCA). Fifty patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD) detected by dual-source CT (DSCT) were investigated by contrast-enhanced, stress DECT with high- and low-energy x-ray spectra settings during adenosine infusion. A colour-coded iodine map was used for evaluation of myocardial PDs compared with rest DSCT perfusion images. Reversible myocardial PDs according to the stress DECT/rest DSCT were compared with SP-MRI on a segmental basis and CCA on a vascular territorial basis. A total of 697 myocardial segments and 123 vascular territories of 41 patients were analysed. Three hundred one segments and 72 vascular territories in 38 patients showed reversible PDs on stress DECT. Stress DECT had 89% sensitivity, 78% specificity and 82% accuracy for detecting segments with reversible PDs seen on SP-MRI (n = 28). Compared with CCA (n = 41), stress DECT had 89% sensitivity, 76% specificity and 83% accuracy for the detection of vascular territories with reversible myocardial PDs that had haemodynamically relevant CAD. Adenosine stress DECT can identify stress-induced myocardial PD in patients with CAD.

Abstract: We study the efficiency of deblocking algorithms for improving visual signals degraded by blocking artifacts from compression. Rather than using only the perceptually questionable PSNR, we instead propose a block-sensitive index, named PSNR-B, that produces objective judgments that accord with observations. The PSNR-B modifies PSNR by including a blocking effect factor. We also use the perceptually significant SSIM index, which produces results largely in agreement with PSNR-B. Simulation results show that the PSNR-B results in better performance for quality assessment of deblocked images than PSNR and a well-known blockiness-specific index.

Abstract: BACKGROUND Bee venom has been used as a traditional medicine to treat arthritis, rheumatism, back pain, cancerous tumors, and skin diseases. However, the effects of bee venom on the prostate cancer and their action mechanisms have not been reported yet. METHODS T o determine the effect of bee venom and its major component, melittin on the prostate cancer cells, apoptosis is analyzed by tunnel assay and apoptotic gene expression. For xenograft studies, bee venom was administrated intraperitoneally twice per week for 4 weeks, and the tumor growth was measured and the tumor were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. To investigate whether bee venom and melittin can inactivate nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), we assessed NF-κB activity in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Bee venom (1–10 µg/ml) and melittin (0.5–2.5 µg/ml) inhibited cancer cell growth through induction of apoptotic cell death in LNCaP, DU145, and PC-3 human prostate cancer cells. These effects were mediated by the suppression of constitutively activated NF-κB. Bee venom and melittin decreased anti-apoptotic proteins but induced pro-apoptotic proteins. However, pan caspase inhibitor abolished bee venom and melittin-induced apoptotic cell death and NF-κB inactivation. Bee venom (3–6 mg/kg) administration to nude mice implanted with PC-3 cells resulted in inhibition of tumor growth and activity of NF-κB accompanied with apoptotic cell death. Therefore, these results indicated that bee venom and melittin could inhibit prostate cancer in in vitro and in vivo, and these effects may be related to NF-κB/caspase signal mediated induction of apoptotic cell death. Abstract: Background and objective: Because the mortality and social burden associated with COPD is increasing, repeated surveys of the prevalence of COPD have been used to assess risk factors, detect potential patients, and establish early diagnoses and management protocols. We report the prevalence of spirometrically detected COPD in Korea in 2008, using data from the fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey. Methods: Using nationwide stratified random sampling, based on the Korean Statistical Office census, 6840 subjects aged ≥19 years underwent spirometry, which was performed by four trained technicians, during 2008. The place of residence, levels of education and income and smoking status, as well as other results from a COPD survey questionnaire were also assessed. Results: Airflow obstruction (FEV1/FVC < 0.7) was detected in 8.8% of subjects aged ≥19 years (11.6% of men and 5.9% of women) and COPD was detected in 13.4% of subjects aged ≥40 years (19.4% of men and 7.9% of women). Of the 6840 subjects, 27.3% were current smokers and 17.2% were former smokers, and the prevalence of COPD was higher in current and former smokers than in never smokers. Approximately 94% of patients with COPD had mild-to-moderate disease, without apparent symptoms; only 2.4% had been diagnosed by a physician and only 2.1% of patients had been treated. The independent risk factors for COPD were smoking, advanced age and male gender. Conclusions: Although the prevalence of COPD in Korea is high, the disease is underdiagnosed and most COPD patients are under-treated.
