Abstract: A series of five thermally and chemically stable functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs), namely, TpPa-NO2, TpPa-F4, TpBD-(NO2)2, TpBD-Me2, and TpBD-(OMe)2 were synthesized by employing the solvothermal aldehyde-amine Schiff base condensation reaction. In order to complete the series, previously reported TpPa-1, TpPa-2, and TpBD have also been synthesized, and altogether, eight COFs were fully characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform IR (FT-IR) spectroscopy, 13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. These COFs are crystalline, permanently porous, and stable in boiling water, acid (9 N HCl), and base (3 N NaOH). Abstract: Anisotropic metal nanoparticles have distinct optical behavior when compared with their spherical counterparts. In this report, we demonstrate a simple method involving the reduction of aqueous gold ions by the extract of the lemongrass plant leading to the formation of gold nanotriangles with interesting absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region of the electromagnetic spectrum. We show that, by simple variation of the experimental conditions, it is possible to vary the size of the gold nanotriangles and, thus, to tune the absorbance of flat gold nanoparticles in the NIR region. The NIR absorption of the gold nanotriangles is expected to be of application in hyperthermia of cancer cells and in IR-absorbing optical coatings. We show that the lemongrass extract synthesized gold nanotriangles can be easily cast in the form of films on glass substrates and that these films are highly efficient in absorbing IR radiation for potential architectural applications.

Abstract: The important greenhouse effect of methane (more than an order of magnitude greater than CO2) makes it essential to eliminate/control the methane emission from natural gas engines/power plants and petroleum industries. Catalytic combustion of methane is favored over homogeneous combustion, because the former greatly facilitates the oxidative destruction of methane. Moreover, use of catalysts for methane combustion in gas-turbines affords lower working temperatures (as compared to gas-fired turbines) and thermodynamically limits NOx (which is an extremely harmful environmental pollutant) emission. A large amount of work has been undertaken to develop catalysts both for controlling methane emission as well as for generating power in high temperature natural gas-turbines. This review will address the different issues related to the variety of catalysts which have been employed for methane/lower alkane combustion. Although all the related important aspects of the combustion catalysts will be addressed, greater emphasis will be placed on recent work in this field.
