Abstract: This study investigated whether children's self-control and sense of humor could moderate negative effects of daily hassles on their school adjustment. Subjects of this study were 880 6th graders (468 boys, 412 girls) in the Seoul metropolitan area. Children reported their daily hassles, school adjustment, self-control, and sense of humor on questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and moderated regression analysis. Results showed that children who experienced less daily hassles, had higher self-control, and higher sense of humor were well-adjusted in their schools. Children's self-control and sense of humor moderated negative effects of daily hassles on school adjustment of children, although the moderate effect was weak.

Abstract: The risk of prostate cancer has been increasing in men by degrees. To develop a new prostate cancer therapy, we used a stem cell-derived gene directed prodrug enzyme system using human neural stem cells (hNSCs) that have a tumor-tropic effect. These hNSCs were transduced with the therapeutic genes for bacterial cytosine deaminase (CD), alone or in combination with the one encoding human interferon-beta (IFN-β) or rabbit carboxyl esterase (CE) to generate HB1.F3.CD, HB1.F3.CD.IFN-β, and HB1.F3.CE cells, respectively. CD enzyme can convert the prodrug 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) into the activated form 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In addition, CE enzyme can convert the prodrug CPT-11 into a toxic agent, SN-38. In our study, the human stem cells were found to migrate toward LNCaP human prostate cancer cells rather than primary cells. This phenomenon may be due to interactions between chemoattractant ligands and receptors, such as VEGF/VEGFR2 and SCF/c-Kit, expressed as cancer and stem cells, respectively. The HB1.F3.CE, HB.F3.CD, or HB1.F3.CD.IFN-β cells significantly reduced the LNCaP cell viability in the presence of the prodrugs 5-FC or CPT-11. These results indicate that stem cells expressing therapeutic genes can be used to develop a new strategy for selectively treating human prostate cancer.

Abstract: As the number of TV channels increases, it is becoming important to recommend TV shows that users prefer to watch. To this end, we investigate the inherent characteristics of implicit feedback given in the TV show domain, and identify the challenges for building an effective TV show recommendation. Based on the unique characteristics, we define a user's watchable interval, the most important and novel concept in understanding users' true preferences. In order to reflect this new concept into the TV show recommendation, we propose a novel framework based on collaborative filtering. Our framework is composed of (1) preference estimation based on a user's watchable interval, (2) preference prediction based on confidence exploiting watchable episodes, and (3) top-N recommendation considering TV show's staying and remaining times. Using a real-world TV show dataset, we demonstrate that our framework effectively solves the challenges and significantly outperforms other existing state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract: A Bacillus sp. strain producing celluase and xylanase was isolated from environmental soil with LB agar plate containing carboxymethylcellulose (CM-cellulose) and beechwood xylan stained with trypan blue as substrates, respectively. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and API 50 CHL test, the strain was identified as B. subtilis and named B. subtilis NC1. The cellulase and xylanase from B. subtilis NC1 exhibited the highest activities for CM-cellulose and beechwood xylan as substrate, respectively, and both enzymes showed the maximum activity at pH 5.0 and 50°C. We cloned and sequenced the genes for cellulase and xylanase from genomic DNA of the B. subtilis NC1 by the shot-gun cloning method. The cloned cellulase and xylanase genes consisted of a 1,500 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 499 amino acid protein with a calculated molecular mass of 55,251 Da and a 1,269 bp ORF encoding a 422 amino acid protein with a calculated molecular mass of 47,423 Da, respectively. The deduced amino acid sequences from the genes of cellulase and xylanase showed high identity with glycosyl hydrolases family (GH) 5 and 30, respectively.

Abstract: There is a growing pressure for firms to address global warming issues, but firms differ in adopting and implementing management practices in response to climate change. The aim of this study is to assess stakeholder pressure and firms’ responses to climate change, and their effect on emission reduction and operational performance. A survey was conducted and then empirically analyzed using regression analysis. This study shows that financial investors and regulatory agencies are the most influential stakeholders for adopting and implementing climate change management practices. Process efficiency and low-carbon product development are the most adopted carbon management practices while organizational engagement and carbon offsetting are not preferred. This article provides evidence that some firms’ climate change management practices lead to improved operational performance such as cost reduction and enhanced delivery and flexibility, as well as improved climate change performance including carbon emission and energy consumption reductions. This study provides guidance for policy makers and firm managers on how to identify, design and manage global warming issues within the business arena.
