Another bad day at the training ground: Coping with ambiguity in the coaching context

Abstract: The purposes of this paper are twofold. First, we argue that the rationalistic assumptions on which dominant conceptions of the coaching process rest are rather unrealistic. We therefore hold that they have relatively limited potential either for a theoretical understanding of coaching or for guiding practitioners. Second, we tentatively offer the alternative metaphor of ‘orchestration’, derived from research on the management of complex change, as one starting point for developing a more realistic conception of coaching. We assert that this way of thinking about coaching has greater potential as a basis for future research and theorising, with the longer-term aim of informing efforts to improve the practice of coaching and of coach education.

Higher education, social class and the mobilisation of capitals: recognising and playing the game

Abstract: Strategies employed by middle-class families to ensure successful educational outcomes for their children have long been the focus of theoretical and empirical analysis in the United Kingdom and beyond. In austerity England, the issue of middle-class social reproduction through higher education increases in saliency, and students’ awareness of how to ‘play the game’ of enhancing their chances to acquire a sought-after graduate position becomes increasingly important. Using data from a longitudinal study of working-class and middle-class undergraduates at Bristol’s two universities (the Paired Peers project), we employ Bourdieu’s conceptual tools to examine processes of capital mobilisation and acquisition by students to enhance future social positioning. Local martingales, bubbles and option prices

Abstract: In this article we are interested in option pricing in markets with bubbles. A bubble is defined to be a price process which, when discounted, is a local martingale under the risk-neutral measure but not a martingale. We give examples of bubbles both where volatility increases with the price level, and where the bubble is the result of a feedback mechanism. In a market with a bubble many standard results from the folklore become false. Put-call parity fails, the price of an American call exceeds that of a European call and call prices are no longer increasing in maturity (for a fixed strike). We show how these results must be modified in the presence of a bubble. It turns out that the option value depends critically on the definition of admissible strategy, and that the standard mathematical definition may not be consistent with the definitions used for trading.
