A series of North Sea benthos surveys with trawl and headline camera

Abstract: During a series of North Sea demersal fish surveys, a headline camera was used to photograph the sea-bed at intervals of 1 min, throughout the duration of 60 min trawls. A successful series of underwater photographs were obtained at 119 stations throughout the North Sea. In addition, the benthos caught at 317 stations was recorded.A total of ca. 30 species could be identified on the underwater photographs, and of these ten species were sufficiently common or locally abundant for estimates of local population densities to be made. Distributions throughout the North Sea based on specimens trawled and specimens photographed were compared.

Updating the skin sensitization in vitro data assessment paradigm in 2009.

Abstract: Approaches to the interpretation of guinea pig skin sensitization data for both hazard identification and potency assessment have been understood for many years. More recently, the local lymph node assay has to a large extent replaced the earlier guinea pig assays, not least because it provides a more clearly defined and transparent means of identifying hazard, and the ability to measure relative skin sensitization potency. However, beginning in 2009 there will be considerable pressure replace all in vivo assays for skin sensitization with alternative approaches that do not require the use of animals (in vitro and/or in silico methods). As there is a common view that multiple assays will be needed to achieve complete replacement of the in vivo tests, a strategy for the integration of the available data will be required. There has been at least one previous attempt to develop a framework that would provide for integration of relevant information from different sources to reach informed decisions about skin sensitization potential and potency. It is timely now, in the light of recent developments and initiatives, to revisit this paradigm with a view to developing recommendations for modification and refinement. In addition to this, the need for performance standards and an agreed 'gold standard' dataset against which to validate both alternatives and new prediction models is discussed.

Girls' Active Identities: Navigating Othering Discourses of Femininity, Bodies and Physical Education.

Abstract: Within physical education and sport, girls must navigate discourses of valued athletic and gendered bodies that marginalise or ‘other’ non-normative performances through systems of surveillance and punishment. The purpose of this paper is to share girls’ perspectives on how these discourses affected their gender performances and activity engagement. Students aged 13–14 in one ethnically diverse UK secondary school were invited to create a photo diary of the physical activities they engaged in. Photo-elicitation interviews in small groups followed. The girls positioned themselves as physically active but had to carefully manage their activity choices and gender performances in a single-sex physical education environment that regulated deviation from the fit, slender, girly-girl. Although the girls demonstrate the difficulty of resisting, they indicate moments of positioning themselves against norms that suggest the possibilities of shifting gendering processes.
