Abstract: The hard corona, the protein shell that is strongly attached to the surface of nano-objects in biological fluids, is recognized as the first layer that interacts with biological objects (e.g., cells and tissues). The decoration of the hard corona (i.e., the type, amount, and conformation of the attached proteins) can define the biological fate of the nanomaterial. Recent developments have revealed that corona decoration strongly depends on the type of disease in human patients from which the plasma is obtained as a protein source for corona formation (referred to as the ‘personalized protein corona’). In this study, we demonstrate that graphene oxide (GO) sheets can trigger different biological responses in the presence of coronas obtained from various types of diseases. GO sheets were incubated with plasma from human subjects with different diseases/conditions, including hypofibrinogenemia, blood cancer, thalassemia major, thalassemia minor, rheumatism, fauvism, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, and pregnancy. Identical sheets coated with varying protein corona decorations exhibited significantly different cellular toxicity, apoptosis, and uptake, reactive oxygen species production, lipid peroxidation and nitrogen oxide levels. The results of this report will help researchers design efficient and safe, patient-specific nano biomaterials in a disease type-specific manner for clinical and biological applications.

Abstract: Poly(fluorene)-type materials are widely used in polymer-based light emitting devices. In their pristine state, they emit in the deep blue spectral region. During operation there appears, however, an additional emission peak at around 2.3 eV. This observation has usually been attributed to aggregate or excimer formation. Recently, it has been shown that photo- and/or electro-oxidation of poly(fluorene) chains resulting in ketonic defects (i.e., formation of fluorenone groups) can also be held responsible for emission in that spectral region. In this contribution, we apply quantum-chemical techniques to gain a detailed understanding of the optical properties of poly(fluorene)s containing ketonic defects. In particular, we compare model systems for poly(fluorene) with their ketone-containing counterparts, focusing on the influence of excited-state localization effects. The results of the theoretical calculations are confirmed by experimental investigations on statistical copolymers of fluorene and 9-fluorenone.

Abstract: Mental health professionals are routinely called upon to assess the risk of violence presented by their patients. Prior surveys of risk assessment methods have been largely circumscribed to individual countries and have not compared the practices of different professional disciplines. Therefore, a Web-based survey was developed to examine methods of violence risk assessment across six continents, and to compare the perceived utility of these methods by psychologists, psychiatrists, and nurses. The survey was translated into nine languages and distributed to members of 59 national and international organizations. Surveys were completed by 2135 respondents from 44 countries. Respondents in all six continents reported using instruments to assess, manage, and monitor violence risk, with over half of risk assessments in the past 12 months conducted using such an instrument.
