Abstract: It was demonstrated that the simplified ergot congener 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin, 8-OH-DPAT, is able to elicit pronounced biochemical and behavioural alterations indicative of central serotoninomimetic activity. Since these effects are resistant to prior monoamine depletion and/or synthesis inhibition by means of reserpine andα-propyldopacetamide (H22/54), respectively, they are most likely to be attributable to direct serotonin-receptor agonism by 8-OH-DPAT. With regard to central 5-HT neurotransmission the effects of 8-OH-DPAT-increased 5-HT levels, decreased 5-HIAA levels, 5-HT-synthesis rate and 5-HT utilization and inhibited 5-HT neuronal firing-are virtually identical, and comparable in potency, to those reported to result from the administration of lisuride or LSD. In contrast, however, to lisuride and LSD (included for comparative purposes in this study) as well as to several differently N-substituted, 5,6-dihydroxy, 6,7-dihydroxy and 5-, 6- and 7-monohydroxy 2-aminotetralins, 8-OH-DPAT lacks appreciable effects on central catecholamine receptors. The compound may thus be regarded the most potent, selective centrally acting 5-HT agonist described to date. accordance with this it was shown that the full-blown 5-HT-like behaviour syndrome induced by 8-OH-DPAT cannot be antagonized by reserpin phenoxybenzamine, propranolol and haloperidol. In addition, of the truputative 5-HT-receptor blockers cyproheptadine, methergoline and methrothepin only the latter was able to counteract the 8-OH-DPAT-induce syndrome. The results are discussed in relation to the recent subclassification of central 5-HT receptor sites. A comparison between the chemical structures and biological activities for different fragments of the ergot nucleus was also made. The data suggest, in that while the role of the A ring in the ergot structure for dopaminer activity at present is unclear, this ring may be important for the 5-HT-receptor activity like in e.g. lisuride and LSD. Moreover, based on the present results and literature reports, it is speculated that a selective 5-HT-receptor agonist such as 8-OH-DPAT would be liable to induce hallucinations in man.

Abstract: A new method is proposed for the factor analysis of dichotomous variables. Similar to the method of Christoffersson this uses information from the first and second order proportions to fit a multiple factor model. Through a transformation into a new set of sample characteristics, the estimation is considerably simplified. A generalized least-squares estimator is proposed, which asymptotically is as efficient as the corresponding estimator of Christoffersson, but which demands less computing time.

Abstract: To provide a resource for assessing continental ancestry in a wide variety of genetic studies, we identified, validated, and characterized a set of 128 ancestry informative markers (AIMs). The markers were chosen for informativeness, genome-wide distribution, and genotype reproducibility on two platforms (TaqMan assays and Illumina arrays). We analyzed genotyping data from 825 subjects with diverse ancestry, including European, East Asian, Amerindian, African, South Asian, Mexican, and Puerto Rican. A comprehensive set of 128 AIMs and subsets as small as 24 AIMs are shown to be useful tools for ascertaining the origin of subjects from particular continents, and to correct for population stratification in admixed population sample sets. Our findings provide general guidelines for the application of specific AIM subsets as a resource for wide application. We conclude that investigators can use TaqMan assays for the selected AIMs as a simple and cost efficient tool to control for differences in continental ancestry when conducting association studies in ethnically diverse populations.

Abstract: The IceCube Collaboration has previously discovered a high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux using neutrino events with interaction vertices contained within the instrumented volume of the IceCube detector. We present a complementary measurement using charged current muon neutrino events where the interaction vertex can be outside this volume. As a consequence of the large muon range the effective area is significantly larger but the field of view is restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. IceCube data from 2009 through 2015 have been analyzed using a likelihood approach based on the reconstructed muon energy and zenith angle. At the highest neutrino energies between 194 TeV and 7.8 PeV a significant astrophysical contribution is observed, excluding a purely atmospheric origin of these events at 5.6s significance. The data are well described by an isotropic, unbroken power-law flux with a normalization at 100 TeV neutrino energy of (0.90 -0.27 +0.30) × 10-18 Gev-1 cm-2 s-1 sr-1and a hard spectral index of γ = 2.13 ± 0.13. The observed spectrum is harder in comparison to previous IceCube analyses with lower energy thresholds which may indicate a break in the astrophysical neutrino spectrum of unknown origin. The highest-energy event observed has a reconstructed muon energy of (4.5 ± 1.2) PeV which implies a probability of less than 0.005% for this event to be of atmospheric origin. Analyzing the arrival directions of all events with reconstructed muon energies above 200 TeV no correlation with known γ-ray sources was found. Using the high statistics of atmospheric neutrinos we report the current best constraints on a prompt atmospheric muon neutrino flux originating from charmed meson decays which is below 1.06 in units of the flux normalization of the model in Enberg et al.

Abstract: In Tarokh et al. (1999) space-time block codes were introduced to obtain coded diversity for a multiple-antenna communication system, in this work, we cast space-time codes in an optimal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) framework and show that they achieve the maximum SNR and, in fact, they correspond to a generalized maximal ratio combiner. The maximum SNR framework also helps in calculating the distribution of the SNR and in deriving explicit expressions for bit error rates. We bring out the connection between the theory of amicable orthogonal designs and space-time codes. Based on this, we give a much simpler proof to one of the main theorems on space-time codes for complex symbols. We present a rate 1/2 code for complex symbols which has a smaller delay than the code already known. We also present another rate 3/4 code which is simpler than the one already known, in the sense it does not involve additions or multiplications. We also point out the connection between generalized real designs and generalized orthogonal designs.
