Biohydrogen production: prospects and limitations to practical application

TLDR
In this paper, the authors compare the hydrogen production rates of various bio-hydrogen systems by first standardizing the units of hydrogen production and then calculating the size of biohydrogen system that would be required to power proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells of various sizes.

Exceptionally High Rates of Biological Hydrogen Production by Biomimetic In Vitro Synthetic Enzymatic Pathways.

TL;DR: The biomimetic electron transport chain from NADPH to H2 is designed by the introduction of an oxygen-insensitive electron mediator benzyl viologen (BV) and an enzyme (NADPH rubredoxin oxidoreductase, NROR), catalysing electron transport between NADPH and BV, increasing H2 generation rates by approximately five-fold.

Effects of Feedstocks on the Process Integration of Biohydrogen Production.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-step fermentation to produce hydrogen from biomass has been evaluated and compared on the basis of process balances taking into account the integration of the process, showing that the production of hydrogen as energy carrier is technically feasible with all the considered feedstocks and thanks to heat integration, second generation biomass (PSP and barley straws) are competitive with food crops (thick juice).
