Abstract
University of TorontoThe authors summarize 35 years of empirical research ongoal-setting theory. They describe the core findings of thetheory, the mechanisms by which goals operate, modera-tors of goal effects, the relation of goals and satisfaction, and the role of goals as mediators of incentives. Theexternal validity and practical significance of goal-settingtheory are explained, and new directions in goal-settingresearch are discussed. The relationships of goal setting toother theories are described as are the theory’s limitations.

Career commitment and career success: moderating role of self‐efficacy

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the moderating role of self-efficacy on the relationship between career commitment and career success and found that career commitment predicted both objective and subjective career success.

Age-differential motivational consequences of optimization versus compensation focus in younger and older adults

TL;DR: Four studies investigated age-related differences in goal focus in younger and older adults and confirmed the hypothesis that younger adults are more persistent when the same sensorimotor task offers possibility for optimizing performance than when the task requires counteracting a loss in performance (compensation).

Use and Adoption Challenges of Wearable Activity Trackers

TL;DR: Novel implications of the usage patterns are described, including the need to help people be mindful of their physical activity trackers, to understand and further articulate gender differences in use and adoption of wearable devices, to incorporate big data analytics in informing and coaching people’s practices.

Unique effects of setting goals on behavior change: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

TL;DR: Goal setting is an effective behavior change technique that has the potential to be considered a fundamental component of successful interventions.

Why Does the Quality of Health Care Continue to Lag? Insights from Management Research.

TL;DR: This review of management research explains why it has been so difficult to improve quality of care, despite a burgeoning body of scientific evidence on practices that result in better outcomes, and offers six strategies for avoiding innovation implementation failure in health care.

Prospect theory: an analysis of decision under risk

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a critique of expected utility theory as a descriptive model of decision making under risk, and develop an alternative model, called prospect theory, in which value is assigned to gains and losses rather than to final assets and in which probabilities are replaced by decision weights.

Social Foundations of Thought and Action: A Social Cognitive Theory

TL;DR: In this paper, models of Human Nature and Casualty are used to model human nature and human health, and a set of self-regulatory mechanisms are proposed. But they do not consider the role of cognitive regulators.
