This book describes ggplot2, a new data visualization package for R that uses the insights from Leland Wilkisons Grammar of Graphics to create a powerful and flexible system for creating data graphics. With ggplot2, its easy to: produce handsome, publication-quality plots, with automatic legends created from the plot specification superpose multiple layers (points, lines, maps, tiles, box plots to name a few) from different data sources, with automatically adjusted common scales add customisable smoothers that use the powerful modelling capabilities of R, such as loess, linear models, generalised additive models and robust regression save any ggplot2 plot (or part thereof) for later modification or reuse create custom themes that capture in-house or journal style requirements, and that can easily be applied to multiple plots approach your graph from a visual perspective, thinking about how each component of the data is represented on the final plot. This book will be useful to everyone who has struggled with displaying their data in an informative and attractive way. You will need some basic knowledge of R (i.e. you should be able to get your data into R), but ggplot2 is a mini-language specifically tailored for producing graphics, and youll learn everything you need in the book. After reading this book youll be able to produce graphics customized precisely for your problems, and youll find it easy to get graphics out of your head and on to the screen or page.read more

Carbon pools recover more quickly than plant biodiversity in tropical secondary forests
TL;DR: It is indicated that carbon pools and biodiversity show different recovery rates under passive, secondary succession and that colonization by undisturbed forest plant species is slow, and initiatives such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and REDD+ should encourage active management to help to achieve their aims of restoring both carbon and biodiversity in tropical forests.

Inter-annual and decadal changes in teleconnections drive continental-scale synchronization of tree reproduction
Davide Ascoli,Giorgio Vacchiano,Marco Turco,Marco Conedera,Igor Drobyshev,Janet Maringer,Janet Maringer,Renzo Motta,Andrew Hacket-Pain +8 more
TL;DR: This work shows relationships between low- and high-frequency components of the NAO and masting in two European tree species across multiple decades, and supports the connection between proximate and ultimate causes of masting.

A global synthesis of animal phenological responses to climate change
TL;DR: It is shown that temperature primarily drives phenological responses at mid-latitudes, with precipitation becoming important at lower latitudes, probably reflecting factors that drive seasonality in each region.

A Genome-wide Map of CTCF Multivalency Redefines the CTCF Code
Hirotaka Nakahashi,Kyong Rim Kieffer Kwon,Wolfgang Resch,Laura Vian,Marei Dose,Diana A. Stavreva,Ofir Hakim,Nathanael Pruett,Steevenson Nelson,Arito Yamane,Jason Qian,Wendy Dubois,Scott Welsh,Robert D. Phair,B. Franklin Pugh,Victor V. Lobanenkov,Gordon L. Hager,Rafael Casellas +17 more
TL;DR: It is found that CTCF reads sequence diversity through ZF clustering and associates with a wide array of DNA modules via combinatorial clustering of its 11 ZFs.

Global patterns of phosphatase activity in natural soils.
Olga Margalef,Jordi Sardans,Marcos Fernández-Martínez,Roberto Molowny-Horas,Ivan A. Janssens,P. Ciais,Daniel S. Goll,Andreas Richter,Michael Obersteiner,Dolores Asensio,Josep Peñuelas +10 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that organic P (Porg), rather than available P, is the most important P fraction in predicting phosphatase activity, and that P recycling is driven by a broad scale pattern of ecosystem productivity capacity.
