Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Rheumatoid arthritis, alcohol, leflunomide and methotrexate. Can changes to the BSR guidelines for leflunomide and methotrexate on alcohol consumption be justified?

TL;DR: For both drugs, no patterns emerged to suggest that baseline or highest ALT levels were influenced by higher levels of alcohol consumption, and it is appropriate to give similar alcohol advice to patients beginning therapy with either methotrexate or leflunomide.

Systematic review of measures and their concepts used in published studies focusing on the treatment of acute inflammatory arthritis

TL;DR: There is good agreement on ‘what should be measured’ in acuteinflammatory arthritis to allow for a comparison of patient populations, and the ICF provides a valuable reference to identify and quantify the concepts of outcome measures focusing on the management of patients with acute inflammatory arthritis.

The efficacy and safety of opioids in inflammatory arthritis: a Cochrane systematic review.

TL;DR: Based on 11 heterogeneous studies of short duration and high risk of bias, there is weak evidence that opioids are effective analgesics in RA, and AE are common and may offset the benefits.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
