Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Disease activity and functional changes of RA patients receiving different DMARDs in clinical practice.

TL;DR: Although DMARD treatment was shown to improve disease activity in RA patients, functional deterioration was evident in this cohort and measures of functional status are more appropriate than measures of disease activity to evaluate treatment effects of DMARDs in established RA in clinical practice.

Biologic agents for rheumatoid arthritis: 2008 and beyond.

TL;DR: As treatment options for RA expand, nursing care will play an increasingly important role in empowering patients through interventions such as patient education and adverse effect management.

Patient demographics and disease variables correlate with distinct cytokine patterns in mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells from rheumatoid arthritis patients.

TL;DR: There are several interesting differences in cytokine patterns with respect to age at onset, current age, disease severity, and the number of DMARDs the patients require.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
