Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Methotrexate pharmacogenomics and predictors of therapeutic outcome in rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method to solve the problem of "uniformity" and "uncertainty" in the context of data mining, and propose a solution.

Shoulder function and activity limitations in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: Screening and monitoring of shoulder function from disease onset is warranted as the shoulder function is impaired, in particular the shoulder muscle strength, which was 65% of the muscle strength in the reference group.

Recent trends in use of nonbiologic DMARDs and evaluation of their continuation rates in single and dual combination therapies in rheumatoid arthritis patients in Japan

TL;DR: Findings indicate that single MTX treatment may be unable to keep patients in clinical remission or lower disease activity compared with several combination therapies, and recent change in permitted maximum dosage of MTX from 8 to 16 mg/week may improve its efficacy and continuation rate in treating Japanese RA patients.

Epidemiological studies in Malaysia and Sweden on associations between smoking, silica exposure and the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: This study shows that airborne environmental exposures are strongly associated with risk for RA in Malaysia, and occupational exposure to silica was associated with an increased risk of developing ACPA+ RA, but not ACPARA.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
