Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis

TL;DR: It is predicted that leflunomide therapy may improve the long-term outcome of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and reduce the substantial burden imposed by the disease for patient, healthcare provider and payers.

Disability intervention model for older adults with arthritis: an integration of theory of symptom management and disablement process model

TL;DR: The Disability Intervention Model for Older Adults with Arthritis has strengths in that it encompasses the majority of the concepts of the two models, attempts to compensate for the limitations of theTwo models, and aims to understand the impact of rheumatoid arthritis on a patient's physical, cognitive, and emotional health status, socioeconomic status, and well-being.

Newer imaging technology for the diagnosis of early RA and monitoring of inflammation and joint damage.

TL;DR: My father, Nathan Troum, was also arheumatologist, and I would join him when he saw patients in his office, and that was the pretext for my getting involved with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its applications in rheumatoid arthritis.

Safety of Intra-articular Methotrexate Injection With and Without Electroporation for Inflammatory Small Joints in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis.

TL;DR: The combination therapy of electroporation and MTX was safe for RA patients and the grey-scale grade was unchanged in 3 cases and increased in 2 cases, suggesting that local joint inflammation in RA is well controlled by disease-modifying antiral drugs.

Adalimumab for early rheumatoid arthritis.

TL;DR: Adalimumab is a new fully humanized monoclonal antibody that blocks the adverse effects of excess TNF-α that indicates superior rates of remission for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
