Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Herbal therapy for treating rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: Several herbal interventions are inadequately justified by single studies or non-comparable studies in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and there is moderate evidence that oils containing GLA afford some benefit in relieving symptoms for RA.

Effectiveness of Nonpharmacological and Nonsurgical Interventions for Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Overview of Systematic Reviews

TL;DR: The quality of evidence for the effectiveness of most nonpharmacological and nonsurgical interventions in RA is moderate to low.

The use of methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis.

TL;DR: MTX is an effective DMARD with a relatively safe profile compared with other therapies and it is essential that patients be monitored carefully to reduce the potential serious toxicities of MTX.

The smallest detectable difference and sensitivity to change of magnetic resonance imaging and radiographic scoring of structural joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis finger, wrist, and toe joints: a comparison of the OMERACT rheumatoid arthritis magnetic resonance imaging score applied to different joint combinations and the Sharp/van der Heijde radiographic score.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Sharp/van der Heijde method was used to detect progressive joint deformation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by comparing two Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) approaches and radiographic evaluation according to the Sharp-van-Der-Heijde (SVDH) method with respect to sensitivity to change in joint destruction.

Methotrexate Following Unsuccessful Thiopurine Therapy in Pediatric Crohn's Disease

TL;DR: Methotrexate appears effective in maintaining remission in pediatric Crohn's disease, when thiopurines have failed, and consideration should be given to its use earlier in pediatric treatment algorithms.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
