Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Association between duration of symptoms and severity of disease at first presentation to paediatric rheumatology: results from the Childhood Arthritis Prospective Study

TL;DR: Children who have systemic arthritis had the shortest delay to PRh presumably because they are profoundly unwell and children with joint pain/stiffness but normal ESR had longer delays suggesting that if blood tests do not indicate inflammation, the diagnosis of JIA may be overlooked.

Infliximab: a review of its use in Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

TL;DR: Current data suggest that infliximab may be cost effective, especially when long-term clinical outcomes and burden of the diseases are taken into account, and more robust, prospective pharmaco-economic studies are required to better ascertain the cost effectiveness of inflIXimab.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
