Guidelines for the Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis 2002 Update

TLDR
The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.
Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive polyarthritis that is responsible for over nine million office visits annually. It is likely that most nurse practitioners will care for one or more patients with RA because approximately 1% of the adult population is affected by this disabling disorder. The guideline reviewed in this month's column describes the recommended care of patients who have been previously diagnosed with RA.

Indirect Comparison of Tocilizumab and Other Biologic Agents in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Inadequate Response to Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs

TL;DR: Among DMARD-IR patients, tocilizumab shows a pattern of response that differs from that of other biologic agents, and post-hoc analyses suggest that the difference lies in a higher likelihood of ACR70 response with tocilIZumab.

Evidence-based review of biologic markers as indicators of disease progression and remission in rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: How CRP levels may be useful for monitoring the effect of therapy on halting disease progression and why monitoringCRP levels at baseline and after treatment should become a routine part of clinical practice are identified.

Cigarette smoking and radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: A significant trend was observed for reduced radiographic progression and generally more favourable functional scores among heavy smokers, suggesting that cigarette smoke does not accelerate RA disease progression.

Opioid therapy for treating rheumatoid arthritis pain.

TL;DR: There is limited evidence that weak oral opioids may be effective analgesics for some patients with RA, but adverse effects are common and may offset the benefits of this class of medications.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.

TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
