MDCK cells are the preferred cell line for isolation of human influenza viruses from clinical specimens, and are divided into subtypes based on genetic and antigenic differences in the two surface spike proteins, hemagglutinin and neuraminidase.Abstract:
Influenza viruses are negative-sense, single-stranded, enveloped RNA viruses belonging to the family Orthomyxoviridae. Three types exist, influenza A, B, and C. All infect humans, but only A and B are major human pathogens. Influenza type A viruses are divided into subtypes based on genetic and antigenic differences in the two surface spike proteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). The appropriate cell lines to be used for isolation of influenza A or B viruses depend on the clinical information and the host of origin. MDCK cells are the preferred cell line for isolation of human influenza viruses from clinical specimens.read more

TL;DR: Cas13-assisted restriction of viral expression and readout (CARVER), an end-to-end platform that uses Cas13 to detect and destroy viral RNA, is developed, demonstrating Cas13 can be harnessed to target a wide range of ssRNA viruses and CARVER's potential broad utility for rapid diagnostic and antiviral drug development.

Matrix Metalloprotease 9 Mediates Neutrophil Migration into the Airways in Response to Influenza Virus-Induced Toll-Like Receptor Signaling
TL;DR: The results demonstrate a previously unknown contribution of MMP9 to influenza virus pathogenesis by mediating excessive neutrophil migration into the respiratory tract in response to viral replication that could be exploited for therapeutic purposes.

TL;DR: The CDC rRT-PCR Swine Flu Panel served as an effective tool for timely and specific detection of 2009 A (H1N1) pdm influenza viruses and facilitated subsequent public health response implementation.

Long-term neuroinflammation induced by influenza A virus infection and the impact on hippocampal neuron morphology and function

TL;DR: Evidence is provided that neuroinflammation induced by neurotropic H7N7 and infection of the lung with a non-neurotropic H3N2 IAV result in long-term impairments in the CNS, indicating that IAV-associated inflammation induced functional and structural alterations in hippocampal networks.

TL;DR: It is shown that the RING domain is a separate self-association motif that engages ubiquitin-conjugated E2 enzymes as a dimer that helps to fine-tune the efficiency of the RIG-I-mediated antiviral response.

Mortality Associated With Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in the United States
William W. Thompson,David K. Shay,Eric Weintraub,Lynnette Brammer,Nancy Cox,Larry J. Anderson,Keiji Fukuda +6 more
TL;DR: Mortality associated with both influenza and RSV circulation disproportionately affects elderly persons, and influenza deaths have increased substantially in the last 2 decades, in part because of aging of the population, highlighting the need for better prevention measures, including more effective vaccines and vaccination programs for elderly persons.

TL;DR: A previously unidentified antigenic subtype of HA (H16), detected in viruses circulating in black-headed gulls in Sweden, is described and proposed that sequence analyses of HA and NA genes of influenza A viruses be used for the rapid identification of existing and novel HA andNA subtypes.

Survival of Influenza Viruses on Environmental Surfaces
TL;DR: Observations suggest that the transmission of virus from donors who are shedding large amounts could occur for 2-8 hr via stainless steel surfaces and for a few minutes via paper tissues, suggesting that under conditions of heavy environmental contamination, the Transmission of influenza virus via fomites may be possible.
