TLDR
Computer simulations of crowds of interacting pedestrians show that the social force model is capable of describing the self-organization of several observed collective effects of pedestrian behavior very realistically.Abstract:
It is suggested that the motion of pedestrians can be described as if they would be subject to ``social forces.'' These ``forces'' are not directly exerted by the pedestrians' personal environment, but they are a measure for the internal motivations of the individuals to perform certain actions (movements). The corresponding force concept is discussed in more detail and can also be applied to the description of other behaviors. In the presented model of pedestrian behavior several force terms are essential: first, a term describing the acceleration towards the desired velocity of motion; second, terms reflecting that a pedestrian keeps a certain distance from other pedestrians and borders; and third, a term modeling attractive effects. The resulting equations of motion of nonlinearly coupled Langevin equations. Computer simulations of crowds of interacting pedestrians show that the social force model is capable of describing the self-organization of several observed collective effects of pedestrian behavior very realistically.read more

Socially competent navigation planning by deep learning of multi-agent path topologies
TL;DR: A novel, data-driven framework for planning socially competent robot behaviors in crowded environments that constitutes the basis for the design of a human-inspired probabilistic inference mechanism that predicts the topology of multiple agents' future trajectories, given observations of the context.

StarNet: Pedestrian Trajectory Prediction using Deep Neural Network in Star Topology
TL;DR: Zhang et al. as mentioned in this paper proposed StarNet, which has a star topology which includes a unique hub network and multiple host networks, which takes observed trajectories of all pedestrians to produce a comprehensive description of the interpersonal interactions and consult the description and predict future trajectories.

A hybrid multi-scale model of COVID-19 transmission dynamics to assess the potential of non-pharmaceutical interventions
Anass Bouchnita,Aissam Jebrane +1 more
TL;DR: A multi-scale model that simulates the transmission dynamics of COVID-19 shows that panic situations increase the risk of infection transmission in crowds despite social distancing measures, and suggests that pre-symptomatic transmission could be a significant driver of the infection spread.

Intermittent flow and transient congestions of soft spheres passing narrow orifices.
TL;DR: This work studies the statistics of silo discharge of soft hydrogel spheres and finds the outflow is found to become increasingly fluctuating and even intermittent with decreasing orifice size, and with decreasing fill height.

Improved fluid-dynamic model for vehicular traffic.
TL;DR: The fluid-dynamic traffic model of Kerner and Konh\"auser is extended by an equation for the vehicles' velocity variance, able to describe the observed increase of velocity variance immediately before a traffic jam develops.
