The immune system, adaptation, and machine learning

TLDR
A dynamical model for the immune system is described that is based on the network hypothesis of Jerne, and is simple enough to simulate on a computer, and has a strong similarity to an approach to learning and artificial intelligence introduced by Holland, called the classifier system.

The Evolution of Emergent Organization in Immune System Gene Libraries

TL;DR: Experiments are reported which show that the evolution of immune system genes, simulated by the genetic algorithm, can induce a high degree of genetic organization even though that organization is not explicitly required by the tness function.

Nongradient Methods in Multidisciplinary Design Optimization-Status and Potential

TL;DR: This paper primarily focuses on the use of nontraditional optimization methods in multidisciplinary design optimization problems, broadly classified today as soft computing strategies, and examines issues pertinent to using these methods in MDO problems.

Modeling the interaction of the immune system with HIV

TL;DR: This model can account for some of the puzzling features of AIDS: the long latent period, the almost complete absence of free virus particles, the low frequency of infected T4 cells and the slow T cell depletion seen during the course of the disease.

A comparison of negative and positive selection algorithms in novel pattern detection

TL;DR: This paper describes a probabilistic method that uses a negative selection scheme (complement pattern space) to detect any changes in the normal behavior of monitored data patterns to detect anomaly detection.

Somatic generation of antibody diversity

TL;DR: In the genome of a germ-line cell, the genetic information for an immunoglobulin polypeptide chain is contained in multiple gene segments scattered along a chromosome which are assembled by recombination which leads to the formation of a complete gene.

A mathematical model illustrating the theory of turbulence

TL;DR: In this article, the application of statistical analysis and statistical mechanics to the problem of turbulent fluid motion has attracted much attention in recent years, and the authors investigated a complicated system of nonlinear equations, in order to find out enough about the properties of the solutions of these equations that insight can be obtained into the various patterns exhibited by the field and that data can be derived concerning the relative frequencies of these patterns in the hope that in this way a basis may be found for the calculation of important values.
