The immune system, adaptation, and machine learning

TLDR
A dynamical model for the immune system is described that is based on the network hypothesis of Jerne, and is simple enough to simulate on a computer, and has a strong similarity to an approach to learning and artificial intelligence introduced by Holland, called the classifier system.

Multi-kernel optimized relevance vector machine for probabilistic prediction of concrete dam displacement

TL;DR: This study proposes a novel probabilistic prediction approach for concrete dam displacement based on optimized relevance vector machine (ORVM), and lays the foundation for the application of RVM in the field of dam health monitoring.

An artificial immune and incremental learning inspired novel framework for performance pattern identification of complex electromechanical systems

TL;DR: A novel framework for performance pattern identification of the CESs based on the artificial immune systems and incremental learning is proposed in this paper to classify real-time monitoring data into different performance patterns and provides a foundation for fault detection and condition prediction.

Towards a Metaphorical Biology

TL;DR: The metaphorical nature of biological language is examined and the use of metaphors for providing the linguistic context in which similarities and differences are made is described as discussed by the authors, and some pervasive metaphors which are characterised by systemic properties are noted, and in order to provide some focus to the study, systemic metaphors associated with machine, text and organism are discussed.

Integrated defense system overlaps as a disease model: with examples for multiple chemical sensitivity.

TL;DR: Mechanisms of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) are developed from several IDS disease models and large-sample patient self-report epidemiology is described as an alternative or addition to clinical biomarker and animal testing.

Somatic generation of antibody diversity

TL;DR: In the genome of a germ-line cell, the genetic information for an immunoglobulin polypeptide chain is contained in multiple gene segments scattered along a chromosome which are assembled by recombination which leads to the formation of a complete gene.

A mathematical model illustrating the theory of turbulence

TL;DR: In this article, the application of statistical analysis and statistical mechanics to the problem of turbulent fluid motion has attracted much attention in recent years, and the authors investigated a complicated system of nonlinear equations, in order to find out enough about the properties of the solutions of these equations that insight can be obtained into the various patterns exhibited by the field and that data can be derived concerning the relative frequencies of these patterns in the hope that in this way a basis may be found for the calculation of important values.
