In 1992, Piette and colleagues suggested that the ACR revised criteria be reevaluated in light of the above discoveries, and the presence and clinical associations or antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with SLE was suggested.Abstract:
In 1982, the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Criteria Committee of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)published revised criteria for the classification of systemiclupus erythematosus (SLE) (1). During the ensuing decade several investigators, including Drs. Graham Hughes and Donato Alarcon-Segovia, among others, have described the presence and clinical associations or antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with SLE, as well as the occurrence of theprimary antiphospholipid syndrome (2-5). In 1992, Piette and colleagues suggested that the ACR revised criteria be reevaluated in light of the above discoveries (6).read more

Photoprotective effects of a broad-spectrum sunscreen in ultraviolet-induced cutaneous lupus erythematosus: a randomized, vehicle-controlled, double-blind study.
Annegret Kuhn,K. Gensch,Merle Haust,Anna-Maria Meuth,Patrick Dupuy,Percy Lehmann,Dieter Metze,Thomas Ruzicka +7 more
TL;DR: Results indicate clearly that the use of a highly protective broad-spectrum sunscreen can prevent skin lesions in photosensitive patients with different subtypes of cutaneous lupus erythematosus induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation under standardized conditions.

TL;DR: Macrophage activation syndrome is a severe complication and is often inaugural, and high fever and high levels of AST, LDH, CRP, ferritin and PCT should be considered as red flags for early diagnosis.

Brief index of lupus damage: a patient-reported measure of damage in systemic lupus erythematosus.
Jinoos Yazdany,Laura Trupin,Stuart A. Gansky,Maria Dall'Era,Edward H. Yelin,Lindsey A. Criswell,Patricia P. Katz +6 more
TL;DR: The Brief Index of Lupus Damage (BILD) is an interviewer‐administered measure of damage in systemic lupus erythematosus for use in epidemiologic studies in which administration of the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index (SDI) by trained physicians is not possible or feasible.

Vilá,Graciela S. Alarcón,Robert P. Kimberly,John B. Harley,John B. Harley,John B. Harley,Jeffrey C. Edberg +28 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that genetic variants of IRF5 associate with SLE in multiple populations, providing evidence that IRF 5 is likely to be a crucial component in SLE pathogenesis among multiple ethnic groups.

Merrill,R. Hal Scofield,Judith A. James,Carl D. Langefeld,John B. Harley,Chaim O. Jacob +38 more
TL;DR: The findings indicate that STAT4 is likely to be a crucial component in SLE pathogenesis in multiple racial groups and knowledge of the functional effects of this association, when they are revealed, might improve the understanding of the disease and provide new therapeutic targets.

E. N. Harris,Boey Ml,C G Mackworth-Young,A. E. Gharavi,B. M. Patel,S. Loizou,Graham R. V. Hughes +6 more
TL;DR: A new solid-phase radioimmunoassay for the detection of anticardiolipin antibodies is 200-400 times more sensitive than the precipitation method used in the Venereal Disease Reference Laboratory test and appears to have predictive value for thrombosis in SLE and related disorders.

TL;DR: The group of patients presented appears to be closely related, but distinctly separate from SLE, with a history of deep vein thromboses and a family history of SLE or a familial clotting tendency in a minority.
