The 11th edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine welcomes Anthony Fauci to its editorial staff, in addition to more than 85 new contributors. While the organization of the book is similar to previous editions, major emphasis has been placed on disorders that affect multiple organ systems. Important advances in genetics, immunology, and oncology are emphasized. Many chapters of the book have been rewritten and describe major advances in internal medicine. Subjects that received only a paragraph or two of attention in previous editions are now covered in entire chapters. Among the chapters that have been extensively revised are the chapters on infections in the compromised host, on skin rashes in infections, on many of the viral infections, including cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus, on sexually transmitted diseases, on diabetes mellitus, on disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, and on lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly. Nanocrystals are fundamental to modern science and technology. Mastery over the shape of a nanocrystal enables control of its properties and enhancement of its usefulness for a given application. Our aim is to present a comprehensive review of current research activities that center on the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals. We begin with a brief introduction to nucleation and growth within the context of metal nanocrystal synthesis, followed by a discussion of the possible shapes that a metal nanocrystal might take under different conditions. We then focus on a variety of experimental parameters that have been explored to manipulate the nucleation and growth of metal nanocrystals in solution-phase syntheses in an effort to generate specific shapes. We then elaborate on these approaches by selecting examples in which there is already reasonable understanding for the observed shape control or at least the protocols have proven to be reproducible and controllable. Finally, we highlight a number of applications that have been enabled and/or enhanced by the shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanocrystals. We conclude this article with personal perspectives on the directions toward which future research in this field might take.

Shape‐Controlled Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: Simple Chemistry Meets Complex Physics?

Leptin protein is synthesized by adipose tissue and is involved in regulation of milk yield. We investigated the association of genetic polymorphism in the bovine leptin gene with 305 days milk yield for the first 3 lactations. The study was conducted on 209 lactating Karan Fries cattle with known pedigree belonging to 3 genetic groups at an organized herd. All the cattle were genotyped by PCR-RFLP assay, and 3 genotypes, viz. TT, TC and CC were identified in the exon-2 region of leptin gene. Representative PCR products of the genotyped animals were sequenced across the polymorphism. Karan Fries cattle with TT genotype showed significantly higher 305 days milk yield as compared to cattle with CC genotype.

The ties between India and the countries in the Indo-Pacific region go back to the pre-Christian era. Even today, Indian influence on the language, customs, and rituals is visible in Southeast Asia. The Hindu concepts of kingship, administrative institutions, and ceremonies that became deeply embedded in the royal culture of Southeast Asia were disrupted with the arrival of the colonial powers. These traditional linkages have become the key element of India's diplomacy—the “Look East” and the “Act East” policies. This article studies the background of India's sustained public and cultural diplomacy policy in bridging the gap between India, East Asia, and the Indo-Pacific countries in the context of the Act East policy. Using examples from Modi's yoga diplomacy, Bollywood, and Indian cultural festivals, the authors propose that these initiatives should be seen as part of a historical and traditional concept of “paraspara”—mutually sustainable and reciprocal diplomacy that taps into the opportunities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Paraspara, Encounters, and Confluences: India's Soft Power Objective in the Indo‐Pacific Region

Good laboratory practices (GLP) are a set of rules to ensure the quality of laboratory outcomes. It includes different parts among which orientations, communication, and meetings are of prime importance, because these can prepare a beginner to understand the workplace, and thus implement it throughout their academic journey. Executing a quality system in a basic research laboratory is a combative issue; however, considering its importance, it should be applied in all the laboratories in the world. This is a good way to promote the reproducibility and consistency of the data and hence help in training and educating new people to understand, communicate, and do the work in an ethical manner. The laboratories that implement GLP can easily establish the labs by making different plans to keep the students and labs organized. This is high time to implement the concept of GLP, including lab orientations, meetings, and effective communication methods, which can pave the best way to appreciate the scientific problems. Good communication and periodic meetings are a hallmark of the research endeavor. Information not only needs to flow in groups and the laboratories but must also be transferred in an easy-to-understand manner. This chapter summarizes the importance and different ways to instill orientation, communication habits, and meeting periodicity for a better output in research.
